Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)

Virginia Tech Vet School’s DVM program is a four year program. The first three years are traditional classroom and laboratory format. Prior to sophomore year, students select a track, such as small animal, equine, mixed species or public veterinary health. The student’s final year is 12-months of clinical rotations. The overall curriculum of the Virginia Tech Vet School DVM Program includes the normal animal (anatomy, physiology) and disease and clinical issues. The goal of this program is to educate veterinarians with a basic biomedical knowledge and the ability to apply this information as needed with a proper problem solving technique which will lead to excellent patient care and knowledge.

Facilities
There are three campuses for the Virginia Tech Vet School – main campus at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA, Avrum Gudelsky Veterinary Center at College Park, MD, and Marion DuPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg. There are plans to expand the teaching facilities and increase the class size in the near future.

Admissions Recommendations

While the following criteria are not required, they are recommended to be a competitive applicant at the Virginia Tech Vet School:

• An average cumulative GPA of 3.5 or more
• A ‘competitive’ GRE score
• A wide variety of animal experience
• Veterinary experience of 400-600 hours
• Research laboratory or commercial veterinary medicine experience

Admissions Requirements

• Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or 3.3 for the past 45 semester hours
• Completion of 60 semester hours by the end of the spring term of year for which matriculation is desired

Admissions Process

This is a three stage process.

Stage 1 – Screening

• Verify that all required documents have been received
• Verify minimum requirements are met

Stage 2 – Application Evaluation

• Analysis of academic record and GRE score
• Evaluation of non-academic application portions (animal/veterinary experience, references, personal statement)
• 70% of review is on academics and the remaining 30% is on non-academic strengths

Stage 3 – Interviews

• Personal interviews conducted in the Multiple Mini Interview style

Acceptance Rate

8.5% (95 accepted out of 1135 applicants – Class of 2014).

Out of the not more than 120 of the accepted incoming students:

• 50 are for residents of Virginia
• 30 are for residents of Maryland
• Up to 40 are for non-residents, 6 of which are for West Virginia residents

Before you Apply

If you plan on applying to Oregon Veterinary School, you will need to complete all courses by the end of the spring term of matriculation. A bachelor’s degree is NOT required; neither is a specific major as long as the required courses are completed. All pre-requisite courses must be completed with a C- or better.
