Virginia Tech’s School of Architecture + Design’s programs have been recognized in the 2019-2020 DesignIntelligence rankings for professional design education. The undergraduate Architecture program is recognized as the 6th most admired program nationally, while the graduate Architecture program is ranked 13th.
Virginia Tech’s graduate and undergraduate architecture and interior design programs in the School of Architecture and Design were ranked among the top 10 in the nation according to the 2007 survey reportin “DesignIntelligence.”
The School of Architecture and Design had four programs ranked in the top 10 for 2007: the undergraduate architecture program ranked fourth (fourth consecutive year in top 10), the graduate architecture program ranked tenth the undergraduate interior design programs ranked seventh and the graduate interior design program ranked fifth.
“DesignIntelligence” also conducted a skills assessment ranking for architecture programs and the School of Architecture and Design ranked second in Sustainable Design Practice and fourth in Construction Methods & Materials.
“DesignIntelligence” is the only national college ranking survey focused exclusively on design. The survey ranks accredited architecture and design programs from the perspective of practitioners.
“We ask qualified people, a hiring manager or principal, which programs in their hiring experience are best preparing students,” said Dan Downey, the managing editor of “DesignIntelligence.”
Scott Poole, director of the School of Architecture and Design said the survey polled nearly 300 U.S. firms with a disbursed geographical profile that are leaders in their market sector.
The School of Architecture and Design proves to have a very competitive admission process. In 2006, the undergraduate architecture program received over 900 applications for 95 places and the interior design undergraduate program received 160 applications for 15 places.

The graduate program also advanced two spots to be ranked 13th most admired. Combined, graduates from these programs rank as No. 4 in most hired by firms across the country.
The undergraduate program in architecture also ranked highly across several skills assessment areas, coming in No. 2 in construction methods and materials, No. 3 in sustainability, and No. 4 in research. The graduate architecture program was also recognized for its strengths in construction methods and materials, tying for No. 5 alongside Yale University.
In interior design, the undergraduate program was ranked as the No. 11 most admired and also rose three spots in the most hired category to No. 5 in the country.
