Virginia Tech was established in 1872 as a public university. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 30,020 students (fall 2020) on a 2,600-acre campus. The academic calendar is semester-based. Virginia Tech, a former military technical institute in Blacksburg, encourages students to “invent the future.” It is a research powerhouse, with seven research institutes and two university research centers that offer undergraduate and graduate students research opportunities.
