Master’s degrees in Sustainable Development teach students the principles and practices of sustainability. Future graduates can use their knowledge and skills to address major environmental issues, like clean water scarcity, sanitation, renewable energy sources, reusing and recycling waste, overall pollution and the disappearance of endangered species.

If you believe that the natural environment is the most crucial resource for our wellbeing, and that taking care of it and its numerous resources and ecosystems is fundamental for our development and sustainability as a species, you should study a Bachelor’s in Sustainable Development.

Sustainable Development specialisations

Most Sustainable Development courses are offered as M.Sc. (Master of Science) or M.A. (Master of Arts) degrees. It will take 1 or 2 years to finish your studies. While studying Sustainable Development, you can choose from various specialisations, such as Sustainable Energy, Sustainable Management, Planning and Property Development, Sustainable Urban Development, and others.

Sustainable Development courses and skills

The courses you’ll take during a graduate degree in Sustainable Development vary from one university and programme to another. However, you can expect to take classes in Globalisation and the Environment, Innovation for Sustainability, Sustainable Finance, Sustainable Investments, Environmental Science, Sustainable Technology and Materials, Integration of Renewable Systems with the Energy System, etc.

Sustainable Development classes help students develop essential interdisciplinary skills. They range from environmental awareness, intercultural communication, and problem-solving to negotiation, project drafting and management, innovative thinking, and analytical mindset. These skills allow future sustainable development professionals to be part of or manage teams, organisations, and projects that have a positive impact on the natural environment. They achieve this by implementing, supporting, or advocating new sustainable systems, processes, and policies.

ARCHITECTURE
Architects have a huge ability to change the built form, to make it more sustainable and to reduce its carbon emissions, using efficient design and renewable energy. It has not been easy, however, to distinguish which schools of architecture have modernized themselves, and placed a major emphasis on sustainability of design, so choose carefully. Here are some words from one of Canadaโ€™s renowned architects, received in a personal email:

โ€œMost schools of architecture, including those in Europe, North America and China, remain entrenched in the medieval age. They do not train students to address the urgent needs of this world, peace and security, freedom and self expression, poverty and imperialism, respect and understanding โ€ฆ. nor give them imperative tools such as independent thought, critical thinking, free spirit, judicious decision making, discretionary powers, probing questions, different paths, alternative solutions, radical proposals, creativity, imagination or the art of asking real questions. They are still in their formative period.

โ€œThey do not show students how to “rock the boat”, challenge the status quo, adventure and explore the world around them, nor instill in them a passion for the world around them or beyond them, a world beyond the myopic world of money and convention.

โ€œThey do not learn from other professions or go outside of the big box classroom, or beyond their chosen field of architecture into a world that needs them. They do not venture into the fields of biotecture, ecotecture, social justice, peace or multidisciplinary projects. They are not encouraged to “think outside the(ir little) box”.

Architects are not the saviours of the world, as school administrators imagine. Architecture schools in general, with a few exceptions, do not bring in professionals, promote joint ventures, or involve students in real world projects. Upon graduation they have major problems finding work, since they have not built and cultivated rapport, meaningful relationships and teamwork with organizations, NGOs, real needs, or the cry of the poor. The architect’s union is staid and limp. I know how routine school is, and how much students hunger to be set free. ;-)โ€
