Overview of University of Weimar Ranking
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has become well-known for its wide range of teaching and research activities based on civil engineering and architecture-oriented disciplines. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (BUW) is a university located in Weimar, Germany and specializes in the artistic and technical fields. Established in 1860 as the Great Ducal Saxon Art School, it gained collegiate status on 3 June 1910 and received its present name in 1996.
The Bauhaus was founded by Walter Gropius and several other artists who shared his vision of creating a new type of artistically-oriented school that would provide an alternative to the traditional art schools of the time. The Bauhaus was based on three principles: the unity of all creative arts; concentration on basic design problems with emphasis on function; and integration of art into everyday life through craftsmanship.
The Bauhaus was also known for being one of the first schools to accept women as students, which led to a larger number of female graduates than most other art schools at this time.
The university’s motto is “Durch Wissen zur Freiheit” (“Through knowledge towards freedom”).
Education
Today the University offers an extensive spectrum of instruction with over 30 courses of study, including free art, design, web design, visual communication, media design, media culture, architecture, civil engineering, materials science, processing technology, environment, and management. The term Bauhaus stands for an eagerness to experiment, openness, creativity, a close link to industrial practice and internationality. The goal is to get science, art, and technology working together analytically, creatively and innovatively on the planning, construction, and design of current and future spaces of habitation.
