Rockefeller’s uniquely flexible academic program allows students to concentrate on laboratory research by requiring minimal course work and forgoing teaching or service obligations. The goal for the time required for the Ph.D. is 5 years. Students are eligible for Ph.D. degrees upon completion of satisfactory dissertations and defenses. Ph.D. Students Take a Flexible Complement of Courses, Rather Than a Core Curriculum

Students in the biological sciences and physics Ph.D. programs at Rockefeller University fulfill credit requirements with scientific courses of interest. Students can choose to spend their 1st years conducting rotations or to immediately join laboratories for thesis research. This structure maximizes flexibility, allowing students to gain exposure to a variety of laboratories in order to choose thesis topics, or to join relevant laboratories if they already have specific research interests. Rockefeller’s 73 research laboratories are each led by a tenured or tenure-track faculty member, so Rockefeller graduate students can become part of high-quality research efforts in one of a remarkable number of topics.

Tenured Faculty Head Innovative, Interdisciplinary Laboratories with High Quality Facilities

Rockefeller University strives to create a research environment that encourages creativity, interdisciplinary exploration, and collaboration. In order to avoid limiting research efforts, the university does not have individual departments. As a result, the university’s 73 research laboratories are engaged in projects that often span disciplines. The laboratories are grouped into 9 general areas, which correspond to the areas into which the program’s courses are grouped. Faculty members, students, and post-doctoral researchers across the university have access to a comprehensive selection of state-of-the-art resources and facilities. These include tools for electron microscopy, DNA sequencing, spectroscopy, high energy particle physics, and x-ray crystallography, among others.

Centralized Funding Ensures That Graduate Students are Not Dependent on One Laboratory

Fellowship support for Rockefeller graduate students is provided by the university itself, rather than by individual laboratories. This central funding enables students to explore research possibilities without financial dependence on a particular laboratory. For the academic year 2013-2014, fellowship support consists of a $35,000 stipend and a $1,500 research and travel allowance.
