Swiss TPH offers PhD students registered at the University of Basel a broad range of research areas. Swiss TPH’s academic faculty supervises PhD students in the fields of medical parasitology and infection biology, public health and epidemiology and medical anthropology.
Swiss TPH has also contributed substantially to the MD/PhD programme development through its activities with the Swiss School of Public Health (SSPH+) and the University of Basel. In addition, Swiss TPH is on the board of the PhD Program Health Sciences (PPHS) of the Medical Faculty of Basel. In collaboration with ETH Zurich, the inter-university PhD programme in infection biology (IPPIB) was successfully launched in 2014.

The PhD program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics of the University of Zurich is one of the 17 programs of the Life Science Zurich Graduate School offering a dynamic and stimulating international research environment. The overall goal is to train PhD students in designing, conducting and analyzing research studies in biomedicine. Depending on the specific research area students are expected to acquire core competencies in epidemiology or biostatistics.

Courses and Seasonal Schools
Our PhD students can profit from many courses and seasonal schools, offered by any of the above mentioned programs, by the Swiss School of Public Health (SSPH+) partners, by University Basel or by many other providers. PhD students and supervisors discuss together the course work to be done during the PhD studies. While those need to be in line with the rules of University Basel or the additional structured PhD programs, supervisors tailor the schedule to the needs of the students. PhD students should also train transferable skills which are – among others – offered by University Basel.
Focal area of teaching and research
The main goals of the M Sc course in epidemiology are the following:
- To understand the issues raised by health problems at individual and population level, and the standard methods and measures to describe them.
- To understand the key concepts in epidemiology and biostatistics, and their interrelationships.
- To have an in-depth understanding of the standard methods and study designs in epidemiologic research.
- To be able to plan and execute independently basic epidemiologic studies, to analyze and interpret them, and to report them orally and in writing.

Course structure
The Master of Science degree is a postgraduate degree that requires a successfully completed Bachelor’s program. The program awards 120 ECTS credits in total. The Specialized Master’s degree program Epidemiology is a so called mono-course consisting of only one core subject. Supervised practical work over the course of one year constitutes the core of the studies. One ECTS credit point roughly equals 30 hours of study.

The Evidence Synthesis Methods Research Group is looking for a Fully Funded PhD scholar to work on the project “What works best? Methods for ranking competing treatments in network meta-analysis” funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The project entails the development and appraisal of methods to synthesize evidence from clinical studies and rank medical treatments according to their efficacy, safety and acceptability.
The most critical question raised by patients and clinicians at the point of care is “what is the drug of choice for the given condition?”. To answer such a question, researchers perform a comparative effectiveness review by collecting and appraising all studies that compare treatments for the same disease and synthesize their data using a statistical technique, network meta-analysis. While clinicians and guideline developers unanimously agree that a treatment hierarchy is essential for public health decisions, methodologists currently debate several issues underpinning the statistical methods to obtain a treatment ranking from in network meta-analysis. The project aims to a) extend the existing statistical methodology in a number of ways, e.g. by developing models that produce treatment hierarchies for multiple health outcomes b) provide methods that appraise the robustness of the treatment hierarchy in the presence of bias in the data. Within a multidisciplinary and highly motivated environment, the post holder will have the opportunity to gain vast experience of working on exciting theoretical and applied projects and collaborate with leading international researchers.
Requirements:
