It is an open research university that is associated with the LERU, Europaeum, and the German Excellence Universities. Earlier, the university was known as the Ingolstadt University. The German Universities Excellence Initiative entitles the university as ‘Elite University’ in Germany. In the year of establishment, the university consisted of only four faculties, namely the Faculty of Jurisprudence, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Philosophy. Initially, the university was built in the Old Academy but later on, in 1826, it was shifted to Ludwigstrabe. It gained popularity as the best university for scientific research during the nineteenth century. In 1903, the university began admitting female students and became a coeducational institute.

Undergraduate Studies: Bachelor and State examinations
In order to be admitted in a Bachelor’s or state examination degree, you will need to be proficient in German language and in possession of a university entrance qualification. In addition, admission into many Bachelor’s degree programs and all state examinations is also dependent on further conditions, such as, pre-registration, aptitude tests or local or national admission restrictions which depend in turn on the average grade of your school leaving certificate (“numerus clausus”).
The standard period of study for Bachelor’s degree programs is three to a maximum of four years. In state examination degree programs, which are mixed with internships, the period of study can vary widely from course to course.
Advanced Studies: Master’s and other Postgraduate degree programs
The Master’s degree program lasts for two years. In order to get admitted into a Master’s degree program, you will need a first degree (usually a Bachelor’s degree). You will also need to meet further conditions in order to qualify; these are detailed in the respective examination regulations. When applying to complete a Master’s degree program at the LMU,Munich, you will need to show evidence of a high level of proficiency in the German language. An exception is made here for Master’s degree programs and some double degree programs in which the course language is English.
Doctoral Degree
After completion of your Master’s degree program , you can proceed to acquire a doctoral degree (Dr. or PhD). There are some specific constellations (particularly in natural sciences) which allow students to embark on doctoral studies immediately on completion of a Bachelor’s degree (“fast track”). A doctorate is proof of advanced academic ability, and is based on the completion of a candidate’s own piece of academic writing and an oral examination. The academic writing can be written as an individual project, supervised by a PhD mentor.
International Students
International applicants (without German nationality) who wish to study at the LMU will generally need to submit their application to the International Office. However, in certain cases, they will need to apply to the Student Office or the Foundation for University Admissions.
International students who seek admission into LMU, Munich undergraduate programs are assessed based on the following:
1.Certificate of language proficiency (C1 level at least) in German
