Case Western Reserve University Transfer Requirements

  1. complete the requirements of the Seminar Approach to General Education and Scholarship (SAGES), as described below;
  2. complete two semesters of physical education through a combination of half- and/or full-semester physical education courses, as described below;
  3. complete the requirements of the major field of study, as described in the relevant sections of the General Bulletin;
  4. complete the general education requirements of the school and degree program in which the student’s major field of study falls, as described in the relevant section of this chapter of the General Bulletin (Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Management, Nursing);
  5. complete a course of studies with a cumulative grade point average of no less than 2.000 for work taken at Case Western Reserve University; and
  6. earn in residence at Case Western Reserve University a minimum of 60 semester hours, of which at least 15 must be earned after the student has earned a total of 105 semester hours.

We want to make your education affordable. So at Case Western Reserve University, we evaluate all first-year applicants for several scholarships, while offering more for which you can apply. (Plus, we offer need-based aid and meet 100 percent of demonstrated need for students entering fall 2017 or later.)

Our Office of Undergraduate Admission awards scholarships using multiple criteria, including:

  • Academic achievement
  • Performance on standardized tests
  • Leadership
  • Artistic talent
  • Other personal qualities that distinguish you in the applicant pool

University Scholarship

Recognizing outstanding academic and personal achievement among first-year applicants

Bolton Scholarship

Named for Frances Payne Bolton, one of the founders of our nursing school, and honoring students who show exceptional promise in the field of nursing and who have not been selected for another scholarship

Michelson-Morley STEM Scholarship

Named in honor of the historic experiment by Case School of Applied Science Professor Albert Michelson and Western Reserve College Professor Edward Morley and awarded to exceptional students who plan to major in science, technology, engineering or mathematics fields

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

Recognizing community college transfer students who have demonstrated outstanding academic and leadership achievement, it is an award of $20,000 per year. The Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship is awarded to active Phi Theta Kappa members who are applying as transfer students.

Scholarship Competitions

We offer a select number of scholarships, including full-tuition awards, that require you to provide additional information and respond to an essay prompt.

Eligibility

  • You can apply to any competition for which you qualify.
  • International students can participate in scholarship competitions unless otherwise noted.
  • If you are otherwise eligible for full-tuition benefits at Case Western Reserve University, you are not eligible for these awards.

Awarding

  • We award each scholarship to a single student annually, unless otherwise noted.
  • Winners will be notified of their award by April 1.
  • If you receive a scholarship in the amount of tuition, this replaces any previous scholarship and/or grant award from the university.

A complete application for admission and a complete scholarship application must be received by Jan. 15 to be considered for these special awards.

Andrew and Eleanor Squire Scholarship

This four-year, full-tuition scholarship was originally established by university trustee Andrew Squire and his wife, Eleanor. It’s open to first-year applicants in the arts; humanities; management; accountancy; and natural, social and behavioral sciences.

A.W. Smith Innovation Scholarship

Two scholarships in the amount of tuition are awarded to students who have shown exceptional achievement in hands-on engineering or science through a successful project. This scholarship is open to first-year applicants in engineering, the physical sciences and mathematics.

FIRST Scholarship

First-year applicants who are seniors in high school and participated at least one full season on a FIRST Robotics Competition or a FIRST Tech Challenge team can apply for one of two scholarships of $10,000 (renewable up to $40,000 over four years with a 3.0 GPA).

Louis Stokes Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Scholarship

This full-tuition scholarship (renewable for up to five years) aims to help economically and educationally disadvantaged students attain an education at CWRU. It also includes a grant of up to $2,500 for computer and book purchases, and assistance securing a paid summer internship. It’s open to all first-year students and transfer students from community colleges.

A four-year, full-tuition scholarship, established by the Treuhaft Foundation in honor of Alexander A. Treuhaft, is open to first-year applicants in science and engineering.

Ranging between $2,000 and $5,000, these scholarships are awarded to first-year applicants who display outstanding leadership in academic and extracurricular pursuits.

This $2,500 award—selected based on academic qualifications, extracurriculars, community involvement, service commitment, recommendations from two faculty members and an essay—is open to nominees from Mundelein High School in Mundelein, Illinois.

National Merit Scholarships

Case Western Reserve sponsors a number of National Merit Scholarships in amounts ranging from $1,000 to $2,000. Competition finalists who declare CWRU as their first choice and who have not received other National Merit or Corporate National Merit Scholarships will be considered.

Performing Arts Scholarships

A small number of full-tuition scholarships are available to students who exhibit excellence in the performing arts. Music majors should submit a video audition as part of the Arts Supplement through the Applicant Status Portal; theater or dance majors should contact individual departments to arrange an audition.

Arts Achievement Scholarships

A small number of $10,000 scholarships are available to students who exhibit excellence in dance, music, studio art or theater, but who may not major in those subject areas. First-year applicants interested in music should submit a video audition as part of the Arts Supplement through the Applicant Status Portal; those interested in dance, studio art or theater should contact individual departments to arrange an audition or portfolio review.

The Douglas W. Nock Endowment Scholarship

The purpose of The Douglas W. Nock Endowment Scholarship is to provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding undergraduate students or admitted high school graduates who have advanced the mission of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community at Case Western Reserve University or as a high school student in their community.

Scholarships in Our Community

As part of our continuing commitment to students in our own community, Case Western Reserve makes several scholarship opportunities available to students in Cleveland and East Cleveland.

Provost Scholars

The Provost Scholars Program is a partnership between Case Western Reserve and East Cleveland City Schools in which East Cleveland middle and high school students are matched with CWRU faculty and staff mentors to improve students’ academic and career outcomes. Students who complete Case Western Reserve University’s Provost Scholars Program and are admitted to Case Western Reserve as first-year students receive a four-year scholarship in the amount of tuition. Provost Scholars are required to reside in university housing.

Cleveland Scholars

Cleveland Metropolitan School District or East Cleveland City Schools students who are admitted to Case Western Reserve as first-year students receive a four-year scholarship in the amount of tuition. Students must have attended a CMSD or East Cleveland City School for their final two years of high school. Cleveland Scholars are required to reside in university housing for their first two years.

Joan C. Edwards Scholarship

Students in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District with an interest in becoming a physician are considered for the Joan C. Edwards Scholarship. The scholarship provides for a four-year scholarship in the amount of tuition, room, board, fees, books and personal expenses, as well as conditional admission to the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine; a medical school scholarship in the amount of tuition and a $20,000 per year stipend. To be considered, apply Early Action or Early Decision I and indicate an interest in a career in medicine. Semifinalists are notified in mid-December and invited for an interview in February. The scholarship recipient will be notified by early March.
