(Reuters) – U.S. News & World Report released its latest law school rankings on Tuesday, with the top of its list mostly unchanged from last year except that the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law moved up one spot, cracking the top 14.
Georgetown University Law Center fell one spot from last year, to 15th. Yale Law School again took the top spot, trailed by Stanford Law School and then Harvard Law School.
U.S. News, which releases rankings of law schools each year based on factors like peer assessments, selectivity and job placements, is often a go-to for prospective law students figuring out where to apply.
The law schools that traditionally land in a top 14 spot in the rankings – the so-called T14 schools – are a major focus of prospective students and some legal employers. UCLA and The University of Texas School of Law in Austin have broken into the top 14 before but often fall just below it.
The 2022 list come after U.S. News last week faced blowback from dozens of deans over the criteria it used to determine a new, standalone ranking of law schools based on their racial and ethnic diversity.
Earlier this month U.S. News said it would for the first time release a ranking based on what percentage of a law school’s student body identifies as an underrepresented minority, alongside its traditional rankings release on March 30. However, it did not count Asian or multiracial students in its calculations.
After deans pushed back on that decision, U.S. News revised its still unreleased diversity rankings to include Asian students, but declined to count multiracial students.
The deans of more 160 law schools called that exclusion “simply wrong and unacceptable” in a letter to U.S. News’ chief data strategist Robert Morse last week, prompting the media company to postpone the list’s release.
“After receiving feedback, we decided to delay the law diversity ranking so we can devote more time to ensuring it accurately reflects the data of underrepresented minorities, including students of two or more races,” Morse said in an email last week. “We will publish it at a later, as yet undetermined date.”
The diversity ranking would come as top law firms face pressure from clients to recruit and retain more diverse talent out of law school.
