General entry requirements

A Bachelor’s degree or in your final year

To fulfil the general entry requirement for a Master’s programme at Chalmers (advanced level/the second cycle), the prospective student must hold a degree equivalent to a Swedish Degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering (minimum 3 years/180 Swedish higher education credits/hp) in Science, Engineering, Technology or Architecture.

  • All applicants must document their formal academic qualifications to prove their eligibility. Only documentation from internationally recognized universities will be approved by the Swedish Council for Higher Education which manages the website universityadmissions.se.
  • If an applicant is also holder of a second degree such as a Master’s degree, that may be as to fulfil specific (course) requirements, it cannot be used to fullfill the general entry requirement on it’s own.
  • Two master’s programmes at Chalmers admit applicants with alternative majors. You will find the pre-requisites for both Entrepreneurship and Business Design and Interaction Design and Technologies at the programmes’ presentation page.

In your final year of Bachelor’s Studies

When you apply to a master’s programme you’re required to document all semesters of your previous academic studies. If you do not have a degree equivalent to a Swedish Bachelor’s degree (minimum 3 years, 180cr), you must prove that you are currently in your final year.Chalmers may the consider your application if you:

  • submit documentation from your university certifying that you are an active student participating in your last year of studies (at Bachelor’s level)
  • provide the official transcripts for all completed semesters to date
  • provide documentation that you meet the English language proficiency requirement
  • If admitted, you must be prepared to show the awarded Bachelor’s degree (complete transcripts and diploma) during your studies at Chalmers. Without it you cannot apply for or have your Master’s degree awarded from Chalmers.

Please note that you must complete all steps in the application process and provide all other requested documentation by the deadline.

Applicant with Swedish higher education credits (högskolepoäng) in Ladok

An applicant who is enrolled in a Swedish first cycle (bachelor’s level) programme as above, fulfills the general entry requirements, if the applicant has completed a minimum of 150hp (högskolepoäng) out of 180hp within the present programme by the deadline for receipt of supporting documents, provided that a certificate of on-going studies which leads to an expected bachelor’s degree has also been submitted.

Applicants cannot be evaluated as unqualified in the qualifying academic merits which include courses from the programme’s plan in those programmes that they have applied for, if that occurs.Courses included in an earned first cycle degree (bachelor’s level) or professional qualification of at least 180 cr. (180hp) or the equivalent foreign qualification that are prerequisites for master’s qualifications may not be included in the higher qualifications. Restrictions for Citizens from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea)

Fees and Scholarships

The application fee and tuition fees

Students who are citizens of a country outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland are required to pay an application fee of 900 SEK via universityadmissions.se. The application fee is an administrative fee and is non-refundable. No scholarships administrated by Chalmers cover the application fee and you cannot be exempted from it.

EU/EEA citizens don’t have to pay fees, but they do have to document their citizenship status.

A change of fee status

If you change your fee status from fee-paying to exempted after being admitted and​ before the start of the semester, you must contact the admissions at Chalmers to be re-assessed. Without a request for re-assessment you status remains unchanged. After the beginning of a semester you may apply for a re-assessment concerning the next semester, never retroactively.
Start by up-loading the complete residence permit with the criteria for being granted the permit visible, at your personal account at antagnings.se/universityadmission.se and send an e-mail to admissions@chalmers.se.
An invoice will be sent out to all admitted fee paying applicants, you must pay the tuition fee on time if a change of status has not been confirmed by the admissions at Chalmers.

Estimation of living expenses

Cost of living and opening a bank account in SwedenAs a student you will have additional costs (apart from tuition fees, when applicable) related to living expenses. These include food, accommodation, transport, course literature, study material and other living expenses.

Opening a bank account in Sweden

  • There are several banks you can choose from so make sure to ask about possible service fees before deciding which one to choose.
  • If you intend to study in Sweden for more than one year, you can receive a personal identity number which will make it easier for you to open a bank account.
  • Are you staying in Sweden for less than a year it will be harder to open a bank account. However, the bank SEB accepts international students as clients.
  • Cheques are generally not accepted and banks do not handle large amount of money, so make sure to get the money/card situation sorted as soon as you can.
  • Bills are generally paid through online banking and your bank can help you set this up.
