If you’ve ever considered entering the healthcare field in Florida, there’s never been a better time to go to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN). The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports favorable employment trends for the field through the year 2029, predicting a faster than average increase of 9%. With salaries like these, and an abundance of schools throughout the state that offer an LPN program, it’s no wonder that nursing has become a hot career prospect in Florida. LPNs in Florida earn approximately $21.34 per hour, which equates to an average annual salary of $44,400. This is roughly $2,650 per year less than the national average.
Florida LPN Licensing Requirements
Attending a nursing program approved by the Florida Board of Nursing is the first step to becoming an LPN in the state. Beyond that, the NCLEX-PN exam will need to be passed. Only graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX exam. Keep in mind that the ability to lift patients, pulling and pushing machinery, or extended periods of standing may be part of everyday job functions as an LPN. Other physical indications of strength may be a requirement.
NCLEX Exam Information
The NCLEX-PN is the exam that students must pass in order to gain licensure as an LPN. While graduates can take the exam, others eligible for the exam include:
- Graduates of an MSN or higher program or educational equivalent.
- Certificates of completion for practical nurse training in a registered nursing program.
- Graduate from a military nursing education program.
- Registered nurses from Canada who’ve pass the Canadian Nurses Association Testing Services Examination after August 8, 1995.
Applicants must submit their applications with the appropriate fees to the Board of Nursing before test registration. Electronic fingerprinting is required of all applicants. The NCLEX can be taken 3 times before being required to successfully complete a Florida Board of Nursing approved remedial training program. A comprehensive overview of the NCLEX-PN can be found here, and students can take the NCLEX-PN practice test as well.
LPN Reciprocity and NLC
Florida has opted into the Nurse Licensure Compact, which allows multi-state nurse licensing. As of January 2018, the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) went into effect, which increased access to care and maintained public protections. LPNs moving into the state of Florida can apply for a license by endorsement. The applicants must have a current license in another state and must have worked as an LPN for 2 of the last 3 years. For detailed information about LPN endorsement by application in Florida check out Florida Board of Nursing’s Endorsement page.
How to Become an LPN in Florida
With the current nursing shortage in the United States, a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a good choice in all states, but especially Florida. Growth in this field for the state is currently higher than the national growth rate. LPNs often administer care to people who have chronic illnesses in a nursing home or home health setting. They may also work under the direction of a doctor or registered nurse in a clinic or hospital setting.
What duties an LPN can do are regulated by each state’s Board of Nursing. The amount of training a person has can also determine what they can and can’t do. Typically, LPNs will perform many of the following duties:
- Give medication, both orally and intravenously
- Collect samples
- Feed patients and insert and change feeding tubes
- Perform CPR
- Check vitals and keep records
- General patient care
Licensure and Other Requirements in Florida
If you are looking for a way to quickly become a nurse in Florida, becoming a practical nurse is probably it. You will need to complete one year of educational and clinical training, which can usually be done at a community or technical college. Once you have completed a program, you can apply for licensure through the Florida Board of Nursing.
To apply through the Board, the program you have completed must be Board approved or accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). They will also accept graduation from a military nursing program or international or non-jurisdiction program. You must also be fingerprinted and pass a background check. An application fee will apply. Before becoming licensed you also will need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). There is an additional fee for this exam. NCLEX testing centers in Florida can be found in Altamonte Springs, Lakeland, Orlando, Port Charlotte and Tampa.
If you already hold a valid practical nursing license in another state, you may apply for a license by endorsement. You will not need to retake the NCLEX if you have passed it previously. Nursing licenses must be renewed every two years. You will have to pay a fee and complete 24 continued education credits plus complete credit hours in the following areas: domestic violence, HIV/AIDS and human trafficking. If the program you completed is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or the Accreditation Board for Specialty nursing Certification, then you don’t have to show proof of continued education.
Florida Nursing Programs
You must complete an educational program to become an LPN in Florida. Here are some of your options in the state:

- Eastern Florida State College. Eastern Florida State College’s Melbourne campus also offers a one-year certificate program. This is a limited admission program. Students will get a certificate for completing the program and can take the NCLEX and apply for licensure.
- Gulf Coast State College. The nursing program at Gulf Coast State is offered at the Port St. Joe campus. This program consists of 1,350 study hours, or one year of study. Graduates will be ready to take the NCLEX and apply for a state license.

Initial Licensure Requirements in FL
Every state has different mandates for practical nursing licensure and renewal. Before enrolling in a nursing program, review the requirements for licensing in the state you eventually wish to work in to make sure you fulfill all the necessary steps. The Florida Board of Nursing is the governmental body that oversees the state’s licensure process and also ensures that the field follows all rules and regulations. This section explains the licensing process specifically for LPNs in Florida and requirements for keeping an active license.
Basic Eligibility
- Proof of graduation from a Florida approved program or program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on College Nursing Education (CCNE)
- Submission of electronic fingerprints to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) using a Livescan service provider
Education & Training Requirements
The Florida Board of Nursing has strict requirements on acceptable preparatory courses for licensure. A 3-week NCSBN course fulfills all criteria for preparing for the NCLEX and the full list of licensure examination preparatory courses from the Florida Department of Health are listed online. Candidates who complete a one-year LPN training program or associate degree from an accredited or Florida-approved nursing program should also be well prepared for the NCLEX exam.
Those who have graduated from a nursing education program in the jurisdiction they are practicing in or a military nursing program and has been issued an NCLEX code must submit this code along with their application for licensure.
Once licensed, practical nurses in Florida can only work under the direction of a registered nurse or other licensed health care provider.
Additional Requirements for Licensure
- Submit an application with $110 Application and Licensing Fee to the Board of Nursing and a $200 fee to Pearson VUE, the testing vendor
- Schedule an appointment with Livescan for electronic fingerprinting
- Pass the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Licensing Examination (NCLEX-PN)
- Once eligibility is approved, you will receive instructions for registration with Pearson VUE
Maintaining a Florida LPN License
The Florida Department of Health will send a renewal postcard in the mail at least 90 days before a license expires. LPNs have until midnight, Eastern Time, on the day their license expires to renew without being placed in delinquent status. The expiration date for current licenses is July 31, 2017. Licenses can be renewed online or by mail. Renewal licensing fees range between $55 and $195 if renewed before the license expires, and depends on Active or Inactive status; higher fees apply if the license is already expired or has become delinquent.
Unless certified by a health care specialty program that has been accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification, renewal applicants are required to complete 27 continuing education hours. All hours must be board approved. A new two CE requirement for Recognizing Impairment in the Workplace goes into effect starting August 1, 2017 and will be required every four years thereafter. LPNs who were issued a license by examination during the current biennium do not need to complete any CEs for renewal. CEs can be fulfilled in person or through home study.

Florida LPN Licensing Requirements
Getting a practical nursing license is a must to gain advancement in the health care and nursing career. A candidate can apply for the licensure either by examination or endorsement. There are some specific requirements that are needed to be fulfilled in order to attain license as an LPN.
Licensure by Examination
Nursing graduates can apply online for the practical nursing licensure by examination. For this, the applicants need to register to the online portal with the basic details like the name, email address, and user ID. Once registered, the applicant will be able to use the online portal with ease for managing the license, renewing the license, updating the account profile, checking the application status and exam results.
Here is the link to apply online.
http://flhealthsource.gov/mqa-services
You are required to meet the following requirements-
- The applicant must be either graduated from an Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) approved nursing education program that has an NCLEX code issued by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
- The candidate should be graduated from a practical nursing school or college approved by the jurisdiction of the place and has been issued an NCLEX code by the NCSBN.
- Applicants are supposed to have completed their graduation from an MSN program or an equivalent that has gained an NCLEX code from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
- The candidate must be a graduate from a non-NCSBN jurisdiction, Puerto Rico, or international nursing education program that has been approved by the board (NON-NCSBN/International Grads).
- Canadian registered nurses who have passed the Canadian Nurses Association Testing Service (CNATS) Examination after August 8, 1995, need to take the NCLEX examination, if they are not licensed in some other state or territory. In order to apply for a licensure by examination, practical nurses from Canada are required to take and pass the NCLEX exam with the minimum passing marks.
- If an applicant is applying for the practical nursing licensure for the first time, then s/he is required to submit an electronic fingerprint to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). Applicants are advised to use the correct Originating Agency Identification (ORI), or any of the FDLE approved Livescan service provider to submit their fingerprints.
- Applicants with a criminal history, such as reckless driving, theft, and robbery, are required to provide the list of each offense on the application. Applicants with a minor traffic offense are exempted from providing the offense list.
- Applicants would have to provide their name, social security number, NCLEX exam details, and basic contact details in order to apply for the licensure by examination.
The procedure that the aspirants ought to follow to apply for licensure by examination is as follows:
- Applicants would be required to submit an application and licensing fee of $110 to the Florida Board of Nursing. Also, they need to register with a Pearson VUE (a testing vendor) with a fee of $200.
- Secondly, candidates need to schedule an electronic fingerprint appointment with a Livescan service provider, in order to get fingerprints.
- Applicants must submit all the requested documents to the board where application specialists will review them. If documents provided by you lack something, you might be asked to provide all the crucial information.
- The applicants will receive the initial license as early as 7-10 days upon passing the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN).
- Once all your documents and transcripts fulfill the eligibility requirements, you will receive Eligibility Letter with instructions regarding registration with the Pearson VUE. Soon after this, approval is transferred to the Pearson VUE.
- An applicant who fails to qualify the NCLEX examination can apply for the re-examination application. If the applicant continuously fails the NCLEX-PN exam three times in a row, s/he would need to complete a remedial training program approved by the Florida Board of Nursing (FBN).

License by Endorsement
If you are currently working as a licensed practical nurse in a state of the USA, and want to avail the rewarding career opportunities in Florida, then go for the licensure by endorsement. However, the state of Florida is not a member of the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC). So, whether you are from an NLC or non-NLC state, you are required to apply for a practical nursing licensure by endorsement. The online services of Medical Quality Assurance (MQA) are run by the Florida Department of Nursing and provide the ease to fill the online application for the license by endorsement. Meet the following requirements and provide all the important documents to avoid any inconvenience-
- Applicants must hold a valid practical nursing license in any other state or a territory of the USA before applying for a licensure by endorsement.
- If you have cleared the State Board Test Pool Examination (SBTPE) or National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), then you are eligible to apply for a practical nursing licensure by endorsement.
- Applicants with a recent experience of 2 of the previous 3 years as an active practical nurse in a state or territory of the USA can also apply for the licensure by endorsement. If the license of the applicant is acted against by the licensing authority, then s/he is unable to file an application for the licensure.
- Submission of an electronic fingerprint to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is required. Make sure to use an FDLE approved Livescan fingerprint scanner to submit your fingerprint.
- Applicants with a criminal history are required to submit a list of each offense to the Florida Board of Nursing. Applicants with minor traffic offense need not submit the list.
- Applicants must submit the application and licensing fee of $110 to the Board of Nursing. Besides this, they also need to submit license verification fee to the board.
- Request your original state (from where you obtained your license) to send the verification of your license directly to the Florida Board of Nursing.
- Fill all the information carefully and provide all the documents requested at the time of application. If any necessary information is left blank or any important document is not sent, the application specialist will send you request for the additional information.
