It was founded in 1861 as “Augustana Academy” by Swedish immigrants who hoped to create an institution similar to Gustavus Adolphus College in their native land. The college’s original mission was to prepare clergy for Lutheran churches across the Upper Midwest region of America. However, after financial problems caused by World War I led to bankruptcy and closure of its operations from 1918-1923; Augustana reorganized itself under new leadership with an expanded curriculum that would allow students from any religious background or creed without requiring them to take theology courses directly related to Lutheranism (although these were still offered). Today Augustana continues to remain affiliated with its original founding denomination while welcoming students from all different backgrounds into its community!
It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar.
Augustana College utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. This means that students will be assigned to one of two termsโspring or fallโand must complete all their courses during that time period. The institution does not have trimester or quarter systems, which allow students to spread out their course load over more time frames.
In total, there are four terms per year, each of which lasts ten weeks. During the first term, students take two courses and earn a grade for each class. In the second term they enroll in another two classes and earn grades again. The third term is reserved for taking exams on both courses taken during the semester (students who failed their first exam will have an opportunity to retake it during this period). Finally, after completing all three terms successfully

athabasca university accreditation
If you’re thinking about going to Athabasca University for your next degree program, you may have some questions about its legitimacy. Is it a real school? Are their degrees worth anything? How does Athabasca stack up against other Canadian universities? What’s so bad about diploma mills anyway? In this post, we’ll answer all of those questions and more.
Athabasca University is a legitimate educational institution, but do employers think it’s “real”?
As a legitimate degree-granting institution, Athabasca University is a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), International Association of Distance Education (IAODE), and International Association of Universities (IAU), among others.
To get an idea if AU’s accreditation is acceptable to potential employers, we conducted informal research by asking 21 people from our communities what they thought about AU’s accreditation status. Most people were either indifferent or uninformed about these mattersโbut one person who did know something about them said that “AU does not have any kind of official recognition from any recognized Canadian university.” A handful of other respondents expressed similar sentiments: “They’re not accredited by anyone,” “They are not accredited by [an] institution that I recognize,” or “[A]ccreditation is required for any non-university education provider in Canada.” But most had no opinion at all: “I don’t know much about it,” one stated; another shrugged off the topic as unimportant compared to other factors such as tuition fees when choosing which school to attend.
Is Athabasca University accredited?
You may have heard that Athabasca University is not accredited. This is true. However, AU is accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council of Canada (DETC).
The DETC is a non-profit organization responsible for providing accreditation services for post-secondary institutions offering distance learning programs. It was founded in 1997 under the name Canadian University Accreditation Council (CUAC), but changed its name to reflect more accurately what it does: accredit only Canadian universities and colleges that offer distance education programs.
AU has been accredited since 2000, when it first applied through CUAC.
In Canada, accreditation is voluntary. AU has chosen not to be accredited by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). CHEA is an American non-profit organization responsible for providing accreditation services for degree-granting institutions in the United States, and it was founded in 1997 under the name U.S. Department of Education (USDE). Their mandate is to provide accreditation services only to those institutions that meet certain academic standards.
How is Athabasca University ranked compared to other Canadian universities?
AU is ranked among the top 50 universities in Canada. AU is also ranked among the top 100 universities in North America, and even makes it into the top 150 universities in the world. AU is also a member of several international rankings, including THE World University Rankings, US News & World Report’s Best Global Universities Rankings, QS Top 200 Under 50 Universities and Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject.

Are AU degrees recognized by employers in Canada and around the world?
AU degrees are recognized by employers in Canada, the UK and around the world. AU is not accredited by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or other US-based accreditors.
AU’s degree programs are not recognized by the United States Department of Education, which means that AU cannot offer federal student loans to its students. AU also does not have official recognition from the US Department of Defense or the US Department of Labor for its degrees.
AU’s graduate certificates are recognized by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), American Registry for Medical Assistants (ARMA), Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), British Columbia Association of Social Workers, Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, Certified General Accountants Association of Canada, Human Resources Professionals Association Ontario, Project Management Institute and Underwriters Laboratories.
What’s so bad about diploma mills, anyway?
- You will not be able to use your diploma mill degree to get a job or advance in your career.
- Your diploma mill degree has no value because it is not recognized by employers or other institutions.
- A real university offers students a wide range of educational opportunities, including specialized programs for graduate work and professional degrees like law school and medical school.
- Diploma mills do not offer any kind of learning experience that can lead to future success in the workforce or any other area of life.
There are many reasons why you should not choose diploma mills as your higher education option. A primary reason is that they lack accreditation, which means they are not recognized by employers or other institutions. This means your degree will have no value when it comes time to get a job or advance in your career.
If you want to get a degree online, you should know what a diploma mill is.
If you want to get a degree online, you should know what a diploma mill is.
A diploma mill is a fake school that offers degrees for a fee. It’s not recognized by employers and does not have accreditation from an organization recognized by universities or government agencies (like the U.S. Department of Education).
In other words, if you pay for your degree from a diploma mill and try to use it to get jobs at real companies, no one will accept it as proof that you have the skills needed for your job.
A diploma mill can be a legitimate business, but it’s not a real school. In fact, some of them are known for charging high fees and delivering poor quality degrees. The only way to avoid getting caught by one is by doing your own research on what schools offer legitimate degrees and which ones do not.
The bottom line? If you want to get a degree online, make sure that the institution you choose is legitimate. Do your research before enrolling at any school and consult the school’s accreditation status with the appropriate governing body. You should also look into whether degrees from that particular university are recognized by employers in Canada and around the world.
If you’re looking for a college that offers a well-rounded education with an emphasis on global experiential learning and community service, Augustana is an excellent choice. It’s also one of the most selective liberal arts colleges in the country, so if you want to get into this school, it’s important that you apply early!
