Audio is an essential part of modern life. Without audio recording and playback, we would have no voice mail, no music, no movies, no cell phone conversations — and most important, no hope of lasting friendships with our emotionally distant relatives. And while audio has many wonderful aspects to it, some of those same relatives would probably agree that it also has a few minor drawbacks: when your friends discuss their new car stereo systems or their favorite CD collection, you may feel a bit like the proverbial horse in the room.

If you’re learning about audio engineering California State University for the first time, the subject might seem overwhelming to those who haven’t previously explored the subject, but you’ll probably find it interesting.

Overview

Students track, mix, and master their own audio projects for television documentaries, public service announcements (PSA’s), instructional films, and a variety of client-based projects for nonprofit organizations, community groups, and corporate partners.

The mission of the Audio Engineering degree from California State University, Dominguez Hills is to

  • provide an academic program that gives students a solid base in the theory and technology skills required for professional careers in the film and television industry;
  • provide hands-on experience in the basic software and hardware tools utilized in film and television production;
  • provide the opportunity for students to work in teams, applying their producing, directing, writing, editing, and engineering skills to produce a variety of professional-quality film and television products; and
  • develop interpersonal skills and professional demeanor that will enable students to work effectively and cooperatively as team players on collaborative projects in the industry.

The Audio Engineering curriculum emphasizes collaborative teamwork among the students in the Digital Media Arts Department’s degree programs.

For example, Film &Television students will write, produce, film, and edit a television documentary or short movie that our Audio Engineering students then take over to perform the sound design elements of ADR, foley, and sound effects editing, while our Music Technology students compose, arrange, and record original music scores for the film’s soundtrack. Conversely, our Audio and Music Technology students record and produce a band’s song while the Film & Television students film and edit the music video of the song as well as the bonus material such as interviews with the band and behind-the-scenes “making of” footage for the interactive DVD, Blu-ray, or website.

The Audio Engineering degree is geared for students who want to have careers working as professionals in the media industry.

These career goals include producer, sound engineer, sound designer, re-record mixer, sound effects editor, and audio/video post production. With Hollywood just 20 minutes from campus, our students have the opportunity to work for and serve internships at a variety of commercial recording studios, live sound reinforcement companies, TV stations, motion picture studios, audio and video post production houses, and cable networks.

Graduates in Audio Engineering will find career opportunities in a wide range of entertainment, informational, and educational venues. The broad focus of the curriculum prepares students for roles as producer, sound engineer, sound designer, re-record mixer, sound effects editor, and audio/video post production.

Music Industry Studies Option

Bachelor of Arts in Music – Music Industry Studies Option

The Music Industry Studies (MIS) Option prepares students for executive and administrative careers in the music industry. Founded in 1994, this option offers a unique blend of the art of music and the discipline of business. Students not only participate in traditional music courses such as individual applied music lessons and performing ensembles, but are also immersed in an interdisciplinary curriculum that provides a foundational understanding of business and how it operates in the music industry. With a strong emphasis on experiential learning, students have ample opportunities to put their classroom education into practice through internships, student-produced events, and a student-run, faculty-advised record label (Five of Five Music Entertainment). Located in Los Angeles, this 4-year degree culminates in a music industry internship experience that often leads students into full-time employment following graduation.

Unlike music business degrees at many other universities, entrance to the MIS Option is by audition. Applicants are required to pass a three-part audition that includes a performance audition (on a musical instrument or voice), an interview, and an essay. As the most populous degree option within the Music Department, entrance to the MIS Option is competitive. The MIS Option historically accepts approximately 50% of all applicants.

Graduates of the MIS Option move into all facets of the music and entertainment industries. Many MIS graduates are experiencing successful careers at major and independent record labels, motion picture studios, music production companies, music publishing companies, music libraries, artist management companies, music promotion companies, or as performing artists. Some students even use their MIS education as a springboard to enter law school with the intention of practicing Entertainment Law.

California State University, Northridge is a proud institutional member of the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association (MEIEA).
