Admission Requirements

All students in the School of Music require admission to the university and admission to the program. For audition guidelines and requirements, prospective undergraduate students should visit: http://www.music.txstate.edu/prospectivestudents/BecomingaMusicMajor.html

Students interested in the Sound Recording Technology major must complete an additional application, submit materials for pre-screening (see www.txstate.edu/music/srt for details), and interview.

Students wanting to enter the music program as a music major (B.A., B.M., B.S. degrees) must submit an online application and audition on their principal instrument or voice the semester before their desired entrance.

Students interested in the Sound Recording Technology major must complete an additional application, submit materials for pre-screening (see www.txstate.edu/music/srt for details), and interview.

Admission to the School of Music is contingent upon admission to Texas State, successful completion of the audition process, and available space in each studio. Moreover, a successful audition does not automatically ensure acceptance to the School of Music.

Transfer students’ transcripts will be evaluated by an academic advisor prior to an acceptance decision to ensure that acceptance and successful degree plan completion are possible here at Texas State.

Prospective music students will not be permitted to enroll in applied music and other music major classes until they have been accepted based on their audition and met with an academic advisor. Auditions are held periodically throughout the year for enrollment the following academic year.

Those prospective music students unable to audition in person due to geographic distance from campus may submit an audio or video recording representative of their performing abilities that meet the audition guidelines for their instrument or voice. The deadline to submit a recorded audition is March 1 (for Fall admission) or November 1 (for Spring admission). Audition requirements are available on the School of Music website.

Essential Information
While there are not currently any schools in Texas that offer a degree specifically in recording arts, there are several schools that offer programs with courses and training in this field. Texas schools offer recording arts classes within programs such as recording technology, music technology and audio engineering technology. These programs typically include a hands-on curriculum and access to modern technologies and facilities. Students are encouraged to engage with their environment and further their education by spending time in campus studios, recording labs and editing stations.

Profiled below are eight of the largest not-for-profit schools in the state offering recording arts-related degree programs.

Angelina College
Located in Lufkin, Angelina College offers an Associate in Applied Science in Sound Recording Technology program through its fine arts division. Along with courses in audio engineering, music business and music literature, the 63-64 credit program features private lessons for students in their main and secondary areas. Students are also required to complete an internship in recording arts technology, as well as an academic core.

Cedar Valley College
Cedar Valley College is located in Lancaster and is part of the Dallas County Community College District. Among the technical disciplines, students can find an Associate of Applied Science in Commercial Music – Recording Technology. Students have access to four studios and an MIDI lab, as well as up-to-date equipment. Core coursework includes music theory, audio engineering, speech communication and commercial recording techniques. The four-semester program also includes a cooperative education experience in radio and television.

Del Mar College
Corpus Christi-based Del Mar College offers an Associate in Applied Science in Sound Recording Technology through its Department of Music. This program touches on various aspects of the recording industry with courses in audio engineering, live sound, audio for video and legal aspects of the entertainment industry. In addition to an engaging curriculum, the program also offers students access to the music technology lab, which features a teaching and recording station, isolation booth and 12 student stations. The school also offers a sound recording business certificate.

Lee College
Lee College is located in Baytown and has multiple programs available in the recording arts. Along with an Associate of Applied Science in Audio Engineering Technology program, the college also offers a certificate program. The programs include coursework in audio engineering, MIDI, music fundamentals, audio electronics and applied music, as well as an internship. The Certificate of Completion in Communication (Audio Recording) program is designed to help students understand the installment and features of sound systems and gain the knowledge needed for careers in the industry of live sound through coursework and an internship. The 27-credit music studio production certificate examines music business, audio engineering and commercial music software.

Stephen F. Austin State University
Nacogdoches-based Stephen F. Austin State University offers a Bachelor of Music in Sound Recording Technology program through the School of Music. The program is comprised primarily of music-related courses with additional courses in electrical engineering, mathematics and science. Following courses in music recording and production, sound editing techniques and live audio engineering, students are required to complete a sound recording internship. To be considered for the degree program, students must create a portfolio that highlights his or her musical and audio recording abilities.

South Plains College
In Levelland, students can complete an associate degree program in sound technology through the creative arts department at South Plains College. The program examines acoustical environments, audio engineering, equipment operation and studio techniques. In addition to coursework, students gain practical training through an internship in recording arts. Students can also complete an eight-credit enhanced skills certificate in sound technology.

Texas State University – San Marcos
Texas State University – San Marcos’ College of Fine Arts & Communication offers a Bachelor of Science in Sound Recording Technology. Along with recording practicum courses and a credited internship, this program features coursework in audio recording techniques, piano techniques, music theory and audio technology. Degree completion is also based on the creation of a senior portfolio and the review of an upper level committee. In order to be considered for admission, students must create a video highlighting their background, experience and goals.

The University of Texas at Austin
The University of Texas at Austin offers a Bachelor of Arts in Music program with an emphasis in recording technology. Housed under the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music, this program features a curriculum comprised of courses in ear training and sight singing, structure of tonal music, audio recording and digital audio. Students also have the opportunity to develop their skills with workstation courses and an internship experience.

Students who have applied to and been accepted by Murray State College will be assigned an MSC email address (ends in @student.mscok.edu).

Upon receipt of your MSC student email address, please use your MSC student email address to sign up for Scholarship Portal as well as apply for scholarships. If you try to use your personal email account, it will not work. The password will be one that you choose. The password that you have for Aggies Online will not work.

Note: Concurrent students will already have email addresses as high school concurrent students, but need to apply for college admission to Murray State as regular students to qualify for scholarships.

Applications open on October 15, 2021 (scholarships that will be awarded for Fall 2022/Spring 2023). The first priority deadline will be February 1, 2022. At this time we will review applicants and begin awarding some of the scholarships. The scholarship portal will remain open and scholarships will still be available, so please apply when you are ready. We will look at awarding more scholarships as the Spring semester progresses.
