The needs-no-introduction media powerhouse hosts a six-week online conservation course! The classes were developed by United for Wildlife and the Zoological Society of London, so expect some top quality learning.


  • OPENLEARN BY THE OPEN UNIVERSITY

The Open University is the groundbreaking distance learning institution where you can study from anywhere in the world as long as you have an internet connection (or if you happen to be enrolled during a global pandemic… from home), but did you know that they have a huge number of free online courses too? They have an enormous nature and environment online course section, covering everything from sustainability to wildlife and oceans, giving you hours of fun!


  • WILDLIFE CAMPUS

Wildlife Campus has a fantastic array of both free and affordable wildlife courses alongside some more expensive options (fancy becoming a fully qualified ranger??). When you first sign up, you are allocated 10 free conservation courses on everything from mountain guiding to birding and even cultural astronomy! You can also try out free course components before you commit to buying an entire course, which is a feature I love.


  • COURSERA

A well-known course hosting site, their environmental online courses range from Environmental Law to Chimpanzee Conservation and even Women in Environmental Biology, all of which are free. Also, although you normally have to pay more for a certificate, Coursera are currently giving free certification on 85 of its courses right now, including some popular environmental courses! So be sure to check those out.

Not the catchiest name, but this site created as part of the UN’s mission to tackle climate change provides incredible high-quality environmental courses covering everything from the REDD+ scheme (reducing carbon emissions through forest conservation) to the Green Economy and even Gender and the Environment.

This well-known free online course platform has a nature and environment section hosting a number of interesting free environmental courses (though you can pay to upgrade for bonus features, like continuous access and certificates). Examples are Climate Change Solutions with the University of Exeter and Ecology and Wildlife Conservation with the University of Leeds.


  • ALISON

No, not a lady on YouTube (haha!), Alison is a website full of free online courses including a nice set of environmental courses, with plenty of sustainability and ecology classes to choose from. You can sign up and go through them for free, or pay extra to remove ads and get certificates of completion.
