VISA & Work Study

VISA

The students who wish to study in the USA at the University of California Berkeley require F and J visa. There are a variety of visa classifications other than F or J that allow school attendance in the USA. Students have two statuses: Dependent Status and Independent Status.

Dependent Status: Students who hold a dependent status are in the U.S. with parents or their spouse and their immigration status depends on this relationship and it is valid until the age of 21. If students hold a dependent-child status and will turn 21 within the next six months to a year, they may need to change their status.

  • A-2 Diplomat
  • E-2 Treaty Trader or Investor
  • J-2 Student or Scholar
  • L-2 Intra-Company Transferee
  • H-4 Temporary Worker

Independent Status: Some students may hold their own independent nonimmigrant status, such as:

  • A-1 Diplomat
  • H-1B Temporary Worker
  • I-1 Journalist
  • L-1 Intra-company Transferee

If Students are planning to cease the activity of that status (employment or other obligations), they must change the status to an F-1 or J-1 student to remain legally in the U.S. and attend the University. The process to get an F-1 or J-1 entry visa are:

  • Obtain I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) from UC Berkeley by completing the NIF.
  • Check the current wait times for visa appointments and issuance in their city.
  • Pay the SEVIS Fee, if applicable.
  • Complete the Visa Application form DS-160.
  • Make a visa appointment and go to an interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

Work Study

The Work-Study Program encourages students to seek part-time employment while they are enrolled in school. The program provides students access to work with the schedule flexibility they need so they can have a healthy balance between school commitments and their work obligations.

  • If students with an F-1 status and hold an I-20 from UC Berkeley Extension, they are eligible to work on the UC Berkeley campus up to 20 hours per week when school is in session and full-time during school breaks.
  • The student can only be in one work-study job at a time.
  • The wages range can be from minimum wage to upwards of $20-plus/hour
  •  F-1 students with UC Berkeley-issued I-20s may work on-campus without any extra authorization while they are fully-enrolled students with valid, unexpired I-20s.
  • J-1 students must obtain written approval from their program sponsor (BIO) before beginning any type of on-campus employment.

Career and Placement after Course

The careers after graduation are:

  • Software Developer
  • Database Administrator
  • Computer Hardware Engineer
  • Computer Systems Analyst
  • Computer Network Architect
  • Web Developer, etc.
