California State University, Chico
Psychology Department
California State University, Chico celebrated its 125th year in 2012, which makes it the second oldest school in the California State University system. U.S. News and World Report has ranked the school within the top ten of Western regional universities since 1998. The U.S. Department of Education and The Princeton Review also award the university top marks in various categories. Under the direction of the College of Behavioral and Social Science, Chico State’s Psychology Department presents students with three options at the graduate level: an MA in Psychological Science, an MA in Applied/School Psychology, and an MS in Marriage and Family Therapy.
Psychology (MA)
With an MA in Psychological Science, students will be qualified to teach at the community college level or to pursue a doctoral program in psychology. The program developed by Chico State’s Psychology Department is broad and allows students to gain a more diverse understanding of academic topics within the field of psychology. According to the program website, graduate-level courses focus on “human development, human learning, advanced general psychology, and contemporary issues.” The degree requires 30 credit hours in addition to research and teaching experience gained through close faculty observation and supervision. Students will also complete a master’s thesis at the end of the program.
Psychology (MA) Psych: Applied Psychology (MA)
The first graduate program offered by the Psychology Department at Chico State was an MA in School Psychology, developed by Dr. Hugh M. Bell. Over the years, the department has developed additional programs with other concentrations, but the school concentration remains one of its more prominent offerings. For the master’s program in applied psychology, students will complete 30 credit hours focusing on core requirements such as analytical review and instructionally focused assessment in schools. The school counseling portion of this degree requires an additional 36 to 41 hours and leads to a credentialing in school psychology by the Pupil Personnel Services.
Psychology (MA) Psych: Psych Science (MA)
Students who want to work in a clinical setting and work directly as licensed MFT practitioners should choose Chico State’s MS in Marriage and Family Therapy as the program has been designed to meet California’s educational licensing requirements. In order to complete the program, enrollees need to complete 60 units divided into 18 required courses and additional coursework. The remaining coursework will come from an analytical review and a master’s thesis. Students must stay continually enrolled in the program in order to graduate, and the program must be completed within five years of the end of the student’s oldest semester.

California State University, Fresno
College of Science and Mathematics
Located on a sizable campus at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains range, California State University, Fresno offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees to about 20,000 enrolled students as of fall 2013. What started as a teaching college in 1911 has evolved into a fully accredited institution within the larger California State University network. Fresno State’s College of Science and Mathematics awards master’s degrees in psychology under the direction of its Department of Psychology, and the programs are both selective and competitive for applicants. Students may pursue a Master of Arts (M.A.) Psychology — General/Experimental Option or a The Master of Arts (M.A.) Psychology — Applied Behavior Analysis Option.
Master of Arts (M.A.) Psychology — General/Experimental Option
According to the website for Fresno State’s Department of Psychology, all graduate students pursuing an M.A. program in psychology will gain instruction in “quantitative methods, experimental design, psychological theory, and research” as part of their general program regardless of specified concentration. Both the General/Experimental Option and the Applied Behavior Analysis Option include a mentorship process designed to help facilitate student learning by pairing candidates with like-minded faculty. At the end of the program, students will complete an individual thesis based on the experiences working with a faculty mentor. The M.A. in general psychology requires 31 credit hours and takes about two years.
The Master of Arts (M.A.) Psychology — Applied Behavior Analysis Option
The M.A. Psychology in Applied Behavior Analysis requires a minimum of 44 credit hours spread out over two years, which makes it a more demanding program than the generalized master’s degree in psychology offered by Fresno State. The difference in credit requirement comes from the fact that students in applied psychology take more electives and must conduct more research related to their field. Courses focus on topics such as functional assessment and intervention, research methods in behavior analysis, and an elective chosen by the student. Upon completion of the degree, students will be eligible to sit for the international certification exam.

California State University, Northridge
Department of Psychology
Located in the heart of San Fernando Valley, California State University, Northridge is one of the biggest single-campus universities in the country. Cal State Northridge believes in providing its 38,000 students with a solid academic education that includes hands-on, practical experiences in a diverse range of pursuits. Despite its size, the school affords students a decent faculty-to-student ratio of 24:1 and plenty of opportunities to explore extracurricular involvement. For those interested in pursuing graduate work in psychology or advancing their careers, Cal State Northridge’s Department of Psychology offers three master’s programs under the guidance of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
M.A., Psychology: Behavioral Clinical Psychology
Created with working students in mind, the M.A. program in Behavioral Clinical Psychology prepares students to work as behavior analysts in various settings. The department’s aim for this program is to instruct students on the “philosophy, theory, science, conceptual framework and methodology” needed to appropriately analyze behavior and implement effective strategies. The program requires 37 units. In addition to completing a master’s degree in psychology, students who finish the program will be eligible to prepare for the Behavior Analyst Certification Board coursework, which enables them to practice with board certification in this field. The board certification process requires an additional 19 units.
M.A., Psychology: Clinical
Cal State Northridge’s clinical psychology emphasis helps students develop the appropriate research, assessment and practical application skills to practice in a clinical setting. For this degree, students will work in the school’s on-campus counseling center to gain experience. They may also choose to be placed in off-campus locations approved by the school. Students will also complete a thesis and up to 15 units of field work. While the program will help prepare students to practice clinical psychology, the degree is not intended to act as a standalone program. California requires independent clinical counselors to hold doctoral degrees, and this 39-unit program will propel students toward that end.
M.A., Psychology: General Experimental M.A. Program
The M.A., Psychology in General Experimental M.A. Program focuses specifically on helping future doctoral candidates develop the appropriate research and methodology for completing Ph.D.-level work. Because this degree is research-intensive, students have to secure a position with a faculty member who will agree to mentor them during the program. This faculty sponsorship is required even of students who meet all of the application requirements, and students won’t be admitted without the recommendation. Students must complete 35 units comprised of core courses, six electives and a thesis project. Once the thesis is finished, students will complete a final oral examination on their thesis topic.
