Program Description

  • Master of Law at the University of Cambridge is offered on a full-time basis for a duration of 9 months.
  • This is an on-campus and thesis-based program.
  • This program begins in the month of October each year and finishes by the end of June month.
  • The LLM, as a master’s degree, is intended for those who wish to pursue further legal studies after completing their first degree in law, including those who are considering an academic career or intending to practice law. 
  • Students take 4 courses of their choice from the list of available LLM course offerings.
  • Each course is assessed by a 3-hour written examination at the end of the LLM year, although students may elect to write a full dissertation in lieu of the written examination for one course.
  • Teaching typically comprises 16 two-hour seminars and/or lectures for each of a student’s 4 courses. 
  • Provision is normally also made for discussion in smaller groups.
  • There are no formal practicals, but all students are expected to undertake substantial amounts of reading and private study for each of their 4 courses and may be required to produce written work in preparation for some classes.
  • Currently, some LLM courses provide the option of assessment by a shorter essay plus a 2-hour examination, rather than the more typical 3-hour examination or full dissertation.
  • After completing this degree program students can proceed to higher education.
  • The Squire Law Library at the University of Cambridge is one of the three largest legal collections in the UK, with almost 180,000 volumes.
  • The University of Cambridge ranks 3rd for Master of Law according to QS World Ranking 2019.

  • The minimum academic entry requirement for the Cambridge LLM program is a first-class bachelor’s degree in law from a UK university or its equivalent from an overseas institution.  
  • Students without a law degree may be considered if they are within the top 10% of lawyers in their jurisdiction. 
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or C1 Advanced-Grade A or B (with at least 193 in each individual element) plus a language center assessment.
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) or C2 Proficiency-Grade A, B, or C (with at least 200 in each individual element).
  • Students must be qualified in IELTS or TOEFL and PTE to get admission in this program.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they complete one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Completed a 4-year bachelor’s degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a B.Sc/B.Com/B.A (3-4 year) degree from well-ranked institutions with an overall grade of 70% or CGPA 7.3+.

  • Statement of Purpose – This is an essay or any written statement written by the student while applying.
  • English Language Requirement – This shows the test score of English Proficiency Exams such as IELTS, TOFEL, PTE, etc.

VISA

The International Student Office provides visa advice on a range of UK student-related immigration matters. It is important to ensure students have the correct immigration permission which permits study in the UK.

  • The type of permission students require depends on the type, of course, they are coming to study:
    • If students are coming for a course or period of study that is for less than six months, students may be able to come as a short-term student.
    • If students are coming to study a course that is longer than 6 months, a student visa is issued for study. 
  • Annually, more than 30,000 Indian students go to study in the UK after going through a three-four week UK student visa process.
  • Student’s acceptance of visa application is totally dependent upon their choice of program, maintenance of funding, adherence to UKVI rules and regulations, and personal interview sessions.
  • UK Student Visa: Types
    • Short-term study visa – Applicants over 16 years of age, Enrolling in 6-month Short Course  in UK institution, Enrolling in 11-month English Language Course
    • Tier 4 student visa (General) – Applicants over 16 years of age, Enrolling in course longer than 6 months.
    • Tier 4 student visa (child) – Applicants aged between 4 and 17 years.

    • Details of passport
    • Tuberculosis test results
    • Criminal record certificate
    • Proof of financial sufficiency that students have enough funds for their entire period of stay in the UK.
    • Parents or legal guardian letters if they are under 18.

Work Study

  • The Work-Study Program gives the student a chance to work on-campus if the student is a full-time student.
  • The students can work up to 20 hours per week off-campus or on-campus during regular breaks.
  • Part-time students are not restricted in the hours they can work, but their admission interview will explore the extent to which they will be able to manage their work and study.
  • Main work visa options for non-EU students in the UK
    • Tier 2 (General) Visa options (for full time and part-time work)
    • Tier 5 (Temporary Worker-Government Authorized Exchange) visa (for work experience or professional training)- It allows students to work in the UK for up to 12 or 24 months depending on the scheme applied for.   
    • Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) Visa (for MBA and other UK graduates who have been identified by Higher Education Institutes in the UK after graduation to establish at least one business in the UK).
  • Jobs for International students in the UK are possible only if they apply for Tier 1, 2, or 5 Visa post studies. There are some conditions, however, to be able to work in the UK
    • An international graduate must get paid at least $27,290 per year, if not, they may be asked to leave the country.
    • Find a job within four months after completion of the course.
