As a student of Computer Science, you may be wondering which school is the best for your education. You want to find a place where you can learn and grow as a person and a professional, but also be able to make the most out of your time there. This post explores the details of Cmu Scs Vs Berkeley Eecs, caltech vs cmu, cmu vs caltech computer science, cmu vs uc berkeley and is berkeley college the same as uc berkeley.
California Institute of Technology, commonly known as Caltech, is a private research university in Pasadena, California. It’s one of the top universities in the world and it boasts of having the highest acceptance rate in the country (8.9%). It was founded in 1891 by Amos G. Throop as a preparatory school. In 1901, it became a two-year college and later became a four-year university in 1921. Read on to know more about Cmu Scs Vs Berkeley Eecs, caltech vs cmu, cmu vs caltech computer science, cmu vs uc berkeley and is berkeley college the same as uc berkeley.
If you’re looking to study computer science at one of the top universities in the country, you might be wondering which one is right for you.
Luckily, we’ve done the research for you! We compared CMU and Berkeley EECS on a variety of factors across their admissions, academics, and student life programs.
We discovered that both schools have great reputations in the field of computer science, but there are some important differences between them beyond their location in Pittsburgh versus Berkeley.
For example, CMU (Carnegie Mellon University) has an average acceptance rate of just over 20%โcompared to Berkeley EECS’ 10%. And CMU offers more than twice as many majors as Berkeley EECS does.
So if you want a more selective program with more options, CMU might be your best bet. If you’re looking for a smaller school with close-knit relationships between students and professors and a strong focus on personal growth, then check out Berkeley EECS!

EECS/CS Program Comparison Chart
College of Engineering EECS Major | Letters & Science CS Major | |
---|---|---|
Admissions | Admitted directly to the major. (Students must apply directly to EECS at admission if interested) | Admitted as undeclared. Must apply to the major after completing prerequisite courses with 3.30 prerequisite GPA. |
Degree earned | Bachelor of Science | Bachelor of Arts |
Differences in major requirements | Ethics requirement; requires Physics, Multi-variable Calculus, and other science electives; requires 20 upper division units in EECS. | No ethics requirement; requires 20 upper division units in EE/CS + 7 technical elective units. |
Differences in college requirements | 2 course R&C sequence; 4 Social Sciences/Humanities courses | 2 course R&C sequence; foreign language; 7 breadth requirements (Arts & Lit, Biological Science, Historical Studies, International Studies, Philosophy & Values, Physical Science, Social & Behavioral Sciences) |
Who should consider this major? | Students who prefer a traditional STEM curriculum; students who may wish to emphasize in EE; students who are certain about their major choice at the time of admission. | Students interested in double majoring in a non-engineering field (e.g. math, stats, physics, english); students who prefer more flexibility; students who want to focus in CS and are not as interested in EE; students who are still exploring their major. |
Accepts AP credit? | Yes. | Yes. |
Not Sure Which Program is Right for You?
There is no difference in the computer science course content between the EECS and CS Majors– the difference is what other subjects you’d like to study.
If you prefer greater flexibility in your coursework, or have an interest double-majoring, then the CS Major might be a good choice. There is greater opportunity to explore other departments, such as economics, statistics, business, and music.
If you have an interest in electrical engineering, or have and interest in double-majoring in another engineering major, the EECS Major may be better suited for you.

cmu vs caltech computer science
More details coming up on cmu vs caltech computer science, cmu vs uc berkeley and is berkeley college the same as uc berkeley.
Cal Tech is more of a math/science school, very intense with many requirements. The advantage of Cal Tech is the weather is very nice in California. SCS at CMU is the best for computer science, but Pittsburgh is not the same as Pasadena. Look at Cal Tech’s requirements and compare with SCS at CMU.
Caltech’s computer science program is relatively new. Carnegie Mellon’s program in SCS is the best in the country. However, there are other factors to consider like the previous post said. However, just strictly Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon’s SCS definitely has the upper hand.
CMU’s got a pretty huge department with a ton of different classes offered, so I think it would be an easy choice if money’s not an issue. It’s really easy to find research at both schools, but since CMU’s got a much larger faculty, you’re more likely to find research that you really like than at Caltech where I imagine you could just doing research just so you have some experience.

This complete guide analyzes both the quantitative and qualitative differences between UC Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). This comparison is particularly valuable at understanding the cultural nuances between the colleges since it uses student videos to capture the โvibesโ of campus – these videos are exclusively available on CampusReel ๐
Before we get into the nitty-gritty, letโs go through a general overview of the high-level differences between UC Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). The table below summarizes some of the most important statistics around competitiveness, costs, etc.

City Name | Berkeley | Pittsburgh |
WARNINGS: Based on net price alone, UC Berkeley is the cheaper option. However, this sticker price may not adequately represent the difference in living costs between Berkeley and Pittsburgh. UC Berkeley is in a Mountain and Carnegie Mellon is in a Mid-Atlantic – sometimes off campus meals and housing costs can dramatically vary between schools.
Is UC Berkeley or Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Harder to get into? Which school is easier to get into?
If youโre looking at acceptance rate alone, then UC Berkeley is more difficult to get into. However, each college is looking to fill its incoming class with a variety of students with different strengths, backgrounds, etc. Therefore, the acceptance rate alone is not a good indicator that UC Berkeley is a better school or will be more difficult for you specifically to get into. On the flipside, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is easier to get into based on acceptance rate alone.
