Top 10 Nursing Schools in Georgia

Nursing students should factor both benefits and cost. While some schools seem more attractive at first glance, what matters, in the end, is whether you received your degree and are able to get a job. That being said, in-state students will have more choices and lower costs, so they can be a bit more choosy.

Now, let’s jump into our choices for the Top 10 nursing schools in Georgia.

1. Georgia Southwestern State University

Annual In-State Tuition: $5,080| NCLEX Pass Rate: 90.28%

In-Person: Yes

Online: Yes

Accelerated: No

Bridge: Yes

There’s no denying that the in-state tuition for Georgia Southwestern State University is a huge draw for nursing students. But the variety of programs is also worth noting. Aside from a traditional four-year program, GSW offers an accelerated 2nd year BSN, and LPN-MSN and an online registered nurse RN-BSN program. The plentiful options, along with the impressive NCLEX pass rate, makes this a great destination for in-state students.

2. Emory University

Annual Tuition: $53,070 | NCLEX Pass Rate: 96.26%

In-Person: Yes

Online: Yes

Accelerated: Yes

Bridge: No

Yes, the cost of Emory University’s tuition is sure to make some eyes pop. But the quality of education this small liberal arts school offers may be the best all-around of any school on this list. Employers recognize this, too; according to Emory, 88% of the graduates of their traditional BSN program were employed within three months of finishing their degree. So, for students looking for private education at a small school, Emory is one of Georgia’s best options.

3. Georgia State University

Annual In-State Tuition: $8,948 | NCLEX Pass Rate: 85.50%

In-Person: Yes

Online: Yes

Accelerated: No

Bridge: Yes

One of Georgia State University’s main pillars is social change. Thanks to the school’s location in Atlanta, students have the opportunity to impact a large, vibrant community in a positive way. Social change also plays a role in the nursing curriculum, and students will have a chance to work with children at local schools. For students that want to continue their education, Georgia State also offers a master’s of science in nursing (MSN) and doctor of nursing practice (DNP), along with an RN-MS program for existing nurses.

4. Mercer University

Annual Tuition: $36,594 | NCLEX Pass Rate: 91.45%

In-Person: Yes

Online: Yes

Accelerated: Yes

Bridge: Yes

With three locations across Georgia, Mercer University is one of the widest-reaching schools, which is impressive for a private school. Prospective nursing students also get the benefits of a private school, including smaller class sizes and more personal education. The most popular undergraduate nursing program, the traditional BSN, boasts one of the highest NCLEX pass rates in Georgia. While the tuition may seem high, many of Mercer’s students receive some form of financial aid.

5. Augusta University

Annual In-State Tuition: $8,648 | NCLEX Pass Rate: 86.60%

In-Person: Yes

Online: Yes

Accelerated: Yes

Bridge: Yes

Named after the city it’s based in, Augusta University is best known as a large, public research school. While public research is most likely going to attract nurses who are pursuing their MSN or DNP, Augusta also has a strong BSN program. The BSN program can be completed on either of Augusta’s campuses (they have an additional location in Athens), and there are various BSN tracks students can take. Overall, Augusta offers an affordable, comprehensive nursing education.

6. University of West Georgia

Annual In-State Tuition: $4,264 | NCLEX Pass Rate: 91.35%

In-Person: Yes

Online: No

Bridge: No

In terms of value and NCLEX pass rate of recent graduates, it’s tough to beat the University of West Georgia. While this school may not carry the same clout as other schools on this list, students interested in nursing are going to get everything they need to succeed. It’s also worth mentioning that UWG doesn’t have as many BSN tracks as other schools, although they do have a traditional BSN program. For the price and results, this should be on all Georgia residents’ list.

7. Columbus State University

Annual In-State Tuition: $7,334 | NCLEX Pass Rate: 89.68%

In-Person: Yes

Online: Yes

Accelerated: No

Bridge: Yes

Where many schools on this list are chosen for their traditional program, Columbus State University’s strength lies in its non-traditional nursing programs. Yes, a traditional BSN program is offered and graduates boast an impressive NCLEX pass rate, but the online RN-BSN program is the real highlight. Grads of this online nursing program have a 100% employment rate, and the degree can be completed in just a year. Of course, this program depends on nurses already being registered.

8. Kennesaw State University

Annual In-State Tuition: $7,432 | NCLEX Pass Rate: 95.16%

In-Person: Yes

Online: Yes

Accelerated: No

Bridge: No

The most important thing to know about Kennesaw State University is that it’s among the 50 largest public institutions in the nation. In many ways, KSU feels more like a town of its own, something that prospective students should be aware of. Regardless of their size, the traditional BSN program is what future nurses are most interested in. KSU has one of the state’s highest NCLEX pass rates for grads and affordable tuition for any in-state students. If you’re looking for a big school with a great nursing program, Kennesaw State University may be the best choice.

4 Key Factors That Affect Nursing School Tuition

Keep in mind that colleges and universities reserve the right to change tuition rates at any time. The yearly tuition rates listed here will vary for each individual student depending on various factors including,

  1. Transfer credits
  2. Completed competency exams
  3. Amount of credits taken per year
  4. Financial aid awards

Check with the specific school for current tuition rates.

Nurse Salary and Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)

  • Georgia employs 75,430 nurses, higher than most states.
  • The annual mean wage for nurses in Georgia is $69,590, or $33.46 per hour. While this is lower than the national average, Georgia has a lower standard of living than most other states. Pay for nurses can also be higher in denser urban areas like Atlanta.

One big advantage of studying in Georgia is the high demand for registered nurses. The Atlanta-Sandy Springs- Roswell metropolitan area is a top employer for registered nurses, according to the BLS.

Prior to beginning a long, successful nursing career, the best place to start is earning a BSN. After, graduates will take the NCLEX, become a registered nurse, and find employment. Because nurses depend on so many factors to get a job, the school you choose could determine your future career.

Next Steps:

After you’ve reviewed the top nursing programs in Georgia, the next step is to start applying to different schools. You should always be prepared to apply to multiple schools, too, since you never know which school could offer you a scholarship to attend.

  1. Get in contact with an admission representative from each school. They know the ins and outs of that school’s application process, and they’ll tell you everything you need to know about the application process.
  2. Make sure you are eligible to apply to the nursing program. It’s also important to know that acceptance into a school does not guarantee acceptance into a nursing program. Nursing programs often have additional, often stricter, requirements for entry. Be sure you meet these prior to applying to a school or find out if you can satisfy the additional requirements prior to applying to the nursing program.
  3. Gather the required application materials and documents. It’s best to keep in contact with admissions representatives to ensure that you’re supplying everything that is needed. For example, many schools and nursing programs may require a minimum GPA of 2.75, and others require one or two letters of recommendation. Also, know that you typically apply to a nursing program a year into your college education, so some requirements can be completed after you’ve started your college career.

Remember: if at any point in the application process you feel lost or confused, contact the school’s admission representatives. They’ll walk you through everything you need to do.

Important considerations when comparing schools:

While a high NCLEX pass rate may seem attractive, it’s important to note that these pass rates typically only represent a recent graduating class. Just because 95% of students passed the NCLEX last year doesn’t guarantee the same results for when you graduate in four years.

This is why students should consider multiple factors prior to choosing which school to attend. Factors to consider include:

  • Size of the school
  • Tuition cost
  • The acceptance rate to the university
  •  The acceptance rate to the nursing program
  • NCLEX pass rate
  • The school’s accreditation (regional and national)

Why you should care about the nursing program’s accreditation

Nursing students who complete their studies at a non-accredited university will not be able to sit for the NCLEX. Therefore, they will face immense challenges in securing stable, well-paying jobs. Why? Because students who do not take the NCLEX are not eligible to work as Registered Nurses.

The two nursing program accrediting organizations are,

The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN)

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)

These accrediting bodies ensure that all accredited nursing programs adhere to the same standard and criteria.

You should never feel pressured to pick a school just because it seems like a “good enough” college. You’ll be spending four years here, along with thousands in tuition. Be sure that you’re making the best pick for your personal goals.

  1. Emory University4 Year Atlanta, GA Rating 3.8 out of 5 1,523 reviews#1 Best Colleges for Nursing in GeorgiaFreshman: I’m finishing up my first year at Oxford College of Emory University, and I’ve loved it! There’s a strong sense of community that I’ve never felt anywhere else, and all the people are really nice. The student body is incredibly smart, while also being down-to-earth, laidback, and cooperative rather than competitive. The education I receive is second to none, and my professors have been extremely insightful, personable, and accommodating. The campus itself is beautiful, with the tree-filled quad, the nature trail, and the new student center. The main drawback is the food, as, even though the quality is great, there are only really 2 food options on campus and they get repetitive fast. UberEats and DoorDash are lifesavers. Oxford College of Emory University has become my new home, and I can’t wait to go back next year.

I particularly enjoy the easily navigated built up of the highlited inscriptions on their webpages. Moreover, students are allowed to have numerous one-on-one encounters with one another. Which is highly commendable. Even when lectures are over, the management of the school has ensured that all questions directed to the authorities concerned are replied as at when due, for smooth transitions of learning and academic growth. Due to all these new measures, I have made so much friends already, even though I we are yet to start the on-campus studies. I so much likke life at mercer university, especially the modus operandi of the laid down rules. It brings to mind the right way to approach a difficult situation. Especially for students who are shy and hardly reaching out for answers. They are always carried along.

It is the largest (and most beautiful) campus in the world–27,000 acres of land to explore, hike, bike, photograph, and thrive in. The community is wonderful and there are always campus events! The academics are challenging and very well rounded. With small class sizes and a small campus, you really gain connections with professors and other students. The work experience is the school’s best draw. Every student is guaranteed a job–from magazine editor to costume shop employee, media rep, office worker, or even dairy farmer!

I wish that I had begun my college experience at Piedmont. The campus is small enough to know just about everyone but big enough to include a variety of different interests, groups, and activities. The on campus housing at Piedmont is so nice and the food is delicious! My favorite part about Piedmont are the small classroom sizes and how much the professors really care about their students. Outside of class, I love attending sporting events. Piedmont is perfectly located around mountains, lakes, and other outdoor adventures. I wouldn’t change a thing about this school, except maybe the parking.

I am involved in the athletics here and I had a great season with them. My teammates and I got a long very well and I can’t wait to for this upcoming season with them. Even though this is a small and historical school, I do think the dorms should be updated especially Henry and also provide another food option on campus. The campus is really pretty though especially during the fall. The historical brick buildings is one thing that drew me to this school. This school also has great professors that tend to you and help you through courses. One course is their nursing program which is what we are known for and is what I am majoring in, which I am very excited about!

You are immersed in a cultural environment that allows you to gain new knowledge of various people. Also, they offered helpful and exciting programs within The College of Science and Mathematics, to open my self to better academic/occupational opportunities. I truly appreciated my experience there, I truly grew and enjoyed my college life.

However, the only grievance I have with them were most to all the school fees. From tuition to housing, everything was just expensive with them. The application fees were unnecessarily high. I just wish they could have went easy on the cost of attending and living. Thank God for the scholarships I earned, they aided my financial experience. Other than that, I enjoyed my time at KSU!

My only complaint is how they handle a crisis. They can be unorganized and only release small amounts of information to students at a time. Besides that, it’s probably been one of my best decisions. I love how the campus is small but not too small, you run into friends here and there but it’s not high school all over again. The campus is also beautiful, it reminds me a little bit of a historic area. There are also plenty of ways to get involved on campus and find your college friends. For me coming from a big city, it was an adjustment to the small-town feel but its not terrible living here. You still have all the main restaurants plus some local ones that are amazing! The school is located in Rome, Ga, which is a small town in the north western part of Georgia. The school is a Christian based school and does not allow any parties on campus, which is great because you can focus on your education more! The sports teams aren’t really all that great but the Hawks spirit is felt through the campus! The instructors are thorough, though it can be a bit of a trial and error to see how each one grades and what they expect. I worked full-time throughout my program including 180 clinical hours per rotation. I also LOVE that the last course focuses on board reviews by providing students with APEA QBank and the Hollier review. Hands down would recommend. I’ve already had 3 co-workers start with South for their FNP and my mother graduated with her Masters of Nursing Education. 17. South Georgia State College4 Year Douglas, GA Rating 3.83 out of 5 265 reviewsFreshman: I love the school. The only part they need to work on is informing students which papers and processes when they get started. They should have some way of explaining everything that needs to be done because anyone new to college has no idea about all the different things they have going on. Otherwise, the school has great schedules, financial options, professors, and staff. They will work with you. Great school!

  18. Chamberlain College of Nursing – Georgia4 Year Atlanta, GA Rating 3.85 out of 5 141 reviewsJunior: The admissions process was easy for me. The turn around from the time I applied and sent in all items the school requested for admission was a month. My advisor was quick to respond to any questions I had. Overall, I would have to say I’m happy with my process so far!

  19. Wesleyan College4 Year Macon, GA Rating 3.67 out of 5 466 reviewsFreshman: Wonderful atmosphere on campus and in classrooms. Professors and classes are fantastic. Classmates and the highly praised “sisterly love” is touch and go. I met some very lovely people here, but definitely not all. While the education portion is enjoyable and taught by well experienced professors the college management is very poor and they are often not on connecting or comprehensible terms. The campus community is often bustling and very social. I reccomend dorm living over off campus as due to the campus size you might feel “cut off” from the social aspects. The campus itself is quaint and older with some historical portions. The dorms and amenities definitely need some re-vamp but overall very cozy dorm life.

  20. University of North Georgia4 Year Dahlonega, GA Rating 3.69 out of 5 1,772 reviewsFreshman: So far, my experience has been amazing! The environment that the University creates for us students is amazing, even with dealing with COVID precautions. The school provides amazing opportunities for students with clubs, classes, and enrichment activities. The campus is gorgeous and they keep it that way. I love the military style of the college and the friendliness of every staff member I come in contact with. My freshman year is going great!

  21. Georgia Gwinnett College4 Year Lawrenceville, GA Rating 3.63 out of 5 1,713 reviewsSenior: Great cost of attendance! The tuition cost is by far the lowest of most surrounding colleges, and the campus is beautiful. The parking situation could be made much better, as it is often very difficult to find park, or there is no parking available. The variety of foods on campus could also be much better. The eCore online classes offered are definitely very limited, which is a big issue on a campus that is primarily made up of commuters. The classes offered on campus are also quite limited, especially considering the amount the amount has grown over the years, and the availability for upper level classes in most majors.

  22. Georgia Perimeter College2 Year Atlanta, GA Rating 3.56 out of 5 1,556 reviewsSophomore: The atmosphere is welcoming as well as the professors and advisors. The advisors are very helpful and a good guidance for your pathways. They are friendly, professional and hard-working. They never fail to communicate with you whenever you have a problem with something. Moreover, the professors obtain good teaching skills and ensure that there is understanding in their lessons. They are understanding and generous towards their students. There always a positive attitude present in their class and even outside of class. The cafeteria is clean and the food is good. The auxiliary workers are very hardworking and also generous towards the students. Also, the campus security team is very vigilant and protective of us students. They are always alerting us when danger is near or when something bad happens. They always encourage us to be safe and careful. I like it at Georgia Perimeter College.

  23. Middle Georgia State University4 Year Macon, GA Rating 3.75 out of 5 501 reviewsSophomore: MGA is a school of many campuses and I had the pleasure of living on the Cochran campus while commuting to the Eastman campus. Both are quiet little towns with not much to do, which is a great thing if you’re like me and prefer to focus entirely on college. Just because there is nothing to do outside campus, doesn’t mean you’ll have no social life. MGA has an amazing group of students who always host something fun to do like mini golf nights or silent discos. Another wonderful thing about MGA is how willing the professors are to help out any and all of their students. There are tutoring groups, study nights, and all sorts of ways to help you academically succeed. My first year of being here was a roller coaster. It was going so well in the first semester until we had to leave in the middle of the second semester due to Covid-19. Luckily MGA acted quickly and students were placed online. Middle Georgia State University cares about their students, and it’s pretty self evident.

  24. Columbus State University4 Year Columbus, GA Rating 3.63 out of 5 1,440 reviewsGraduate Student: Columbus State University has been a great choice for my online schooling experience. Having a demanding career as an Operating Room nurse didn’t allow much time for getting an advanced degree. However, Columbus State University made it easier by offering part time, instead of only full time courses. The professors are always readily available by email and even via phone. Although I am considered an online student, I have had the privilege to visit the campus (which might I add is by the river)and it is breath taking! In December 2020 I will have earned two degrees with Columbus State University and I couldn’t be more happy!

  25. Augusta University4 Year Augusta, GA Rating 3.6 out of 5 870 reviewsSenior: I’m very happy that I chose to come to Augusta rather than any other school. It has prepared me to become the professional that I hope to soon be. The school is very advanced, particularly in the sciences. The courses are rigorous and always based on the latest information. I never felt that I was “behind” other schools, like I did while doing dual enrollment at a different college during high school.
However, some recommendations I would have for the school would be to become more well-rounded with emphasis on the arts, sport, and humanities. The courses are also extremely rigorous. The school stresses being the best and the harshest – which can be hard at times. Also – the area and social activities are somewhat lacking compared to other schools, from everything I’ve seen. It’s possible to have these things and enjoy them – but it’s a make-the-most-of-what-you-have type of situation.

  26. SponsoredUniversity of Northern Colorado4 Year Greeley, CO Rating 3.58 out of 5 2,171 reviewsFreshman: From the very first semester I observed how great the professors are in this school. My Biology and Chemistry professors were there to help after class hours and if they made a mistake, they were willing to change it. Fitting in was one of my biggest concerns entering UNC. However, on one of the very first days of college there was a huge event where campus activities, clubs, and sports were showcased. That was a great help to me since I didn’t know how to get involved. I became part of Challenge, a Christian organization on campus, and it has been a huge blessing! These people helped me fit in and inspired me to love others.

  29. SponsoredWestern Carolina University4 Year Cullowhee, NC Rating 3.77 out of 5 1,477 reviewsSophomore: Western Carolina University has a lot to offer its students! The campus is located in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, and usually has a solid record for a great education at a reasonable price. There are things that the campus could improve on, such as campus food, non-discriminate professors, and communicating information regularly to students. But overall Western is a great place to live and provides multiple opportunities for growth, scholarships, and involvement!
