Dietetics As A Second Degree
The post-baccalaureate Didactic Program in Dietetics is intended for students who want to become registered dietitians (RD) and have an undergraduate degree without completion of core coursework approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). If the undergraduate degree is not in nutrition, it is likely that this core coursework has not been completed. This coursework is called the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD). Following completion of the DPD, students will need to apply and be admitted to a dietetic internship. Completion of a dietetic internship is required before taking the Registration Examination for Dietitians. Contact the Nutrition and Dietetics Program office for information on dietetic internships.
Application and Admissions
Students pursuing completion of DPD coursework must consult an advisor in the Nutrition and Dietetics Program every semester. Names, telephone numbers, and information about office hours of nutrition advisors can be obtained from the program office in Simpson Hall, 505-277-4535.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics provides a pathway to become a Registered Dietitian after earning a non-dietetics undergraduate degree. A student who completes all courses required for the Dietetics major* through La Salle’s accredited Didactic Program in Nutrition can prepare for the Registered Dietitian credential without completing an entire second degree:
- Apply online to La Salle University through the Office of Adult Enrollment or by calling 215.951.1100.
- Previous transcript(s) will be evaluated by the Program Director for course work that can be applied to Dietetics requirements.
- Personalized course sequence will be developed to complete Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics academic requirements (part-time or full-time). Upon completion of all required course work, you will receive a Verification Statement that permits application to a dietetics supervised practice program.**
- Once academic requirements are met, apply to the La Salle Coordinated Program in Dietetics or outside internship to meet supervised practice requirements.
- Completion of supervised practice qualifies you to take the Registered Dietitian examination to earn the R. D. (also called Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist or RDN) credential, which is granted by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- Once the R.D. credential has been earned, you are eligible to apply for licensure in states that have licensure for dietitians. You can refer to the state licensure board for the requirements in the state where you intend to practice.
- Please contact Dr. Laura B. Frank, R.D., L.D.N., Director of Didactic Program in Nutrition, for further information about the program, curriculum and outcomes at frankl@lasalle.edu
You can also refer to the Didactic Program in Nutrition Student Handbook.

*The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has very specific course requirements for eligibility to apply to a supervised practice program. Courses which may be completed at another college or university include: English Composition, Public Speaking, Computer Science, Statistics, Macroeconomics, Psychology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, and Microbiology. In addition to these courses, 11 (for Coordinated Program acceptance) or 13 (for verification to apply to outside internships) Nutrition courses are required which must be completed through an ACEND-accredited DPD program.
** The supervised practice requirement is an unpaid internship, a minimum of 1200 hours, typically full-time for approximately 10-12 months. The La Salle Coordinated Program offers a spot in our internship for students who meet academic criteria, while application to outside internships is very competitive.
Dietetics Degrees
Nutrition & Dietetics, a subdiscipline of Medicine, is the science that focuses on everything related to food and its effect on our health and overall wellbeing. Learn more!
Nutrition & Dietetics applies to a variety of sciences, but the two most popular specialisations are weight control and chronic illnesses. If you want to change your diet, it’s best to consult a certified nutritionist. There are many diets on the internet, but you should always talk with a professional before adopting one.
Students in Nutrition & Dietetics discover why and how certain eating and nutritional habits are affecting us, and ways we can improve our health. You also learn to provide proper consultation to patients and design nutritional therapies based on people’s individual metabolisms. This knowledge will not only help you to treat people’s diseases, but also to prevent them.
The need for nutritionists is increasing due to the fast pace of our world and our lifestyle. Nutritionists are the people who make sure we don’t eat just the food that only tastes good and looks good, but also the food that’s healthy for us.
Your job won’t be simple, as it’s often easier for people to start a bad habit than change it. Still, you can make an important difference in people’s lives and help them live longer and healthier. You’ll also need to have knowledge about how exercising helps complement a healthy diet in order to give the right advice to your patients.
Graduates from a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nutrition & Dietetics will easily find jobs in fields and organisations such as: private sector or public hospitals, nursing care facilities, advertising or marketing, food manufacturing.
