eth zurich masters requirements

Holders of a Bachelor’s degree from a Swiss, German or Austrian university of applied sciences may apply for a large number of ETH Zurich Master’s degree programmes provided that they fulfil certain formal requirements.

Formal prerequisites

You earned your Bachelor’s degree at a recognised university of applied sciences in Switzerland, Germany or Austria. Your Bachelor’s degree is based upon academic accomplishments comprising at least 180 ECTS credits. Your degree also qualifies you to enter a consecutive Master’s programme without additional requirements at a university in the original university system.
Any other academic accomplishments recognised must also have been acquired at a recognised university.

At the time of application you do not yet have to present the Bachelor’s degree. If you are admitted you must submit proof of the Bachelor’s degree, including the final overall grade, by the beginning of the semester at the very latest.

We only accept applications which are submitted online by the deadline and which contain all required documents.

A degree from a university of applied sciences in a country other than Switzerland, Germany or Austria unfortunately does not qualify the holder for Master’s degree studies at ETH Zurich.

Minimum Bachelor’s degree grade

Admission presupposes an overall Bachelor’s degree grade which corresponds to the stipulations of Art. 11 of the directive

Swiss university of applied sciences

For admission with a Bachelor’s degree from a Swiss university of applied sciences, an overall grade of at least a 5 (Swiss grading system) is required.

German or Austrian university of applied sciences

For admission with a Bachelor’s degree from a German Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften a final result of «very good» is required. From an Austrian Fachhochschule an average grade of «2 or higher» is required.

If Bachelor’s degree studies have not yet been completed at the time of application, the required overall rating must be certificated and submitted before lectures begin at ETH Zurich.

Disciplinary prerequisites

The profile of requirements describes the knowledge and skills required for the respective Master’s degree programme. It will also tell you whether application to that degree programme is possible for holders of a degree from a university of applied sciences.

The profile of requirements is oriented towards the content, scope, quality and skills level of the corresponding ETH Zurich Bachelor’s degree.

Additional requirements for Master’s degree studies

During their Master’s degree studies, graduates of universities of applied sciences must complete additional study achievements comprising 40 to 60 credits in the corresponding ETH Zurich Bachelor’s degree programme.

The specific additional requirements are determined during the acceptance procedure and communicated in the acceptance letter.

The respective study achievements may only be completed when the student matriculates in Master’s degree studies at ETH Zurich.

Language prerequisites

Most Master’s degree programmes at ETH Zurich are taught in English; some require knowledge of both English and German; ands some are taught mostly in German.

Bachelor’s degree from a university of applied sciences must also provide a German language certificate for programmes taught in English, if German is not their mother tongue or if their Bachelor’s degree was not taught in German.

Language prerequisites

Exclusion

If you have been definitively excluded from one or more study programmes at ETH Zurich or another university, admission to that study programme at any level is not possible.

eth zurich molecular biology

The Master programme in Molecular and Structural Biology provides a strong background in the molecular life sciences with a particular emphasis on structural and mechanistic aspects of biology. The major is anchored in the Institute for Molecular Biology and Biophysics, where research groups investigate central cellular processes such as transcription, splicing and translation as well as protein folding and degradation with a focus on the participating molecular machines. We also study membrane transport proteins and molecular assemblies involved in cell-to-cell adhesion and communication.

The Master programme direction offers many and diverse courses: In molecular biochemistry classes, the principles of relating the functions and mechanisms of biological macromolecules with their structures are discussed. A second set of courses introduces students to modern techniques used for three-dimensional structure determination of proteins and nucleic acids including X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy and electron microscopy. It also organizes a course on biophysical methods that can be applied to unravel the mechanisms of biological macromolecules, including modern techniques in fluorescence and single-molecule spectroscopy. These classes can be flexibly combined with courses from other majors to provide the student with a curriculum optimally tailored to his/her individual interests.

Participants of the programme will become experts in experimental biochemistry, which includes protein production, purification, and in vitro reconstitution of their native macromolecular assemblies. They will be trained in biochemical and biophysical characterization of these assemblies in physiologically relevant states, and will have an opportunity to employ biophysical techniques to study interactions between biological macromolecules and their ligands, as well as in three-dimensional structure determination and quantitative analysis of reaction mechanisms on the molecular level.

The successful completion of the Master programme in Molecular and Structural Biology optimally prepares students for a professional career in scientific research areas concerned with biological and biomedical questions on the molecular level. It provides the Master graduates with a solid scientific background for further academic studies towards a PhD, but also with the skills to obtain competitive positions in biotechnology and in the chemical, biomedical and pharmaceutical industry.

eth zurich biology masters

Experimental research is the main focus of the Masters curriculum. Two twelve week research projects as well as the 6 month long Masters thesis are completed in one of the various research laboratories. In addition to the practical lab experience, students also attend major specified lectures. Students are free to choose their major regardless of the electives they chose in their Bachelors program. However, it is also possible for the students to align their Bachelors curriculum with one of the majors in the Masters curriculum.

The 10 majors of the Masters in Biology

Declaring a major in the Masters of Biology program does not limit future scientific careers to any specific direction. Therefore, a major is not a lifelong decision. Students still preserve a large amount of flexibility in the choice of profession. The choice of majors is very broad and range from Ecology and Evolution through Biological Chemistry. Even though the majors vary widely, the methods that are taught are very often similar. Therefore a change of specialization even after graduation is viable.

The following areas of specialization are offered:

  • Biochemistry
  • Biological Chemistry
  • Cell Biology
  • Ecology and Evolution
  • Microbiology and Immunology
  • Molecular and Structural Biology
  • Molecular Health Sciences
  • Molecular Plant Biology
  • Neurosciences (no longer continued)
  • Systems Biology
