Online Film Degrees Overview
There are several types of film degrees offered online that have varying levels and concentrations. The most common concentrations are film studies, filmmaking/production, and screenwriting. These degrees are available at the certificate, associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s levels; however, program type and level will depend on the school. Additionally, different schools will have different availability for online learning; some schools will offer programs that are completely online while others offer a hybrid option, where some classes will be done online and others in person.
Film Studies
Film studies programs are typically designed to teach students how to appreciate, analyze, and critique historical and contemporary films alike. Students may study film theory, aesthetics, and analysis, learn how to write essays on culturally significant films, and develop their own voice for film criticism.
Filmmaking and Production
Filmmaking and production programs typically focus on how a film is produced from a creative and technical side. Students may learn directing techniques, such as how to direct actors on a screen, or they may learn about different types of production equipment, such as lighting, sound, and video cameras, and how they’re used in a film’s production.
Screenwriting
Screenwriting programs are commonly designed to teach students how to write compelling stories for a variety of mediums in the entertainment industry, such as films, tv, commercials, radio, journalism, and transmedia (web-based or multimedia). Students may also learn how to analyze, interpret, and critique films. Additionally, they may learn about ongoing issues in the film and media industry and how to discuss these issues in a professional manner. It can vary by school, but screenwriting students are usually required to complete a full-length screenplay before graduation.
Online film degree students will have the same graduation requirements as campus students. They are required to take the same number of classes, the same type of classes, and complete the same projects. Depending on the school, a gear package of basic equipment needed to complete projects, such as a camera and editing software, can be sent to the student. Other schools that have a hybrid learning format require online students to attend an in-person workshop or let them use the school’s equipment for a fee.
Online learning typically works through a portal set up by the school. This is where students can interact with their classmates and professors, receive assignments and lectures, check progress and due dates, and turn in work.

Film School Scholarships For International Students
A good place to start is by exploring internal NYFA tuition-funding prospects that the Academy offers to long-term applicants. Special NYFA scholarships, NYFA talent and merit awards, and NYFA need-based tuition assistance programs can be found here.
In addition to NYFA’s internal resources, the Academy’s international team has gone to great lengths to research and identify external-funding opportunities. This page includes information about specific global, regional, national, and intranational ‘educational and vocational training’ funding available to international students—both from public and private sources. For specific country resources, please click on your country of citizenship. NYFA cannot guarantee the accuracy of the details given directly by the providers’ websites and so we urge you to review the criteria and details of each source carefully.
An important additional resource is the EducationUSA Program. EducationUSA is a US Department of State network of over 400 international student-advising centers in more than 170 countries. EducationUSA is officially a branch in the Office of Global Educational Programs in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
Many students use creative solutions to help subsidize their NYFA educational experience, such as corporate sponsorship based on a return of investment, and utilizing crowdfunding platforms.
For all questions and assistance needed to help make your dreams of studying at NYFA a reality, please do not hesitate to seek support from your NYFA Admissions Specialist.
