Dental Hygiene Associate Degree Program

Fresno City College Dental Hygiene Program (DH) is designed to educate and train students for entry level practice, obtain an Associate of Science degree and work in a structured health care setting. The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), which allows eligibility to apply for the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and Clinical Licensure.

Accreditation

The dental hygiene program at Fresno City College is accredited by the American Dental Associations’ Commission on Dental Accreditation. The ADA CODA is the only nationally accepted accrediting body in Dental Hygiene. 

What are the minimum requirements for dental school admission?

  1. A minimum of 90 semester units (three years) of university preparation.  However over 90% of the admitted students have completed at least a bachelors degree.  You should consider applying after 90 units only if your science and overall GPAs are well over 3.5.
  2. You must be either a citizen or a permanent resident of the US.
  3. Take the Dental Aptitude Test (DAT).

    Most pre-dental students major in either biology or chemistry.  However, you may take any major that you want as long as you take the minimum required coursework in biology and chemistry.  This will take careful planning on your part.  Consult with an advisor.

What are the minimum course requirements?

The following are the minimum requirements for most US dental schools.  Check the web sites of the dental schools you want to attend for more details of requirements.  There is some variation between schools.

  1. One-year course series in biology chemistry and physics.  At CSU Fresno, the required courses are Bio 1A and 1B, Chem, 1A and 1B, and Physics 2A and 2B.
  2. Organic chemistry.  At CSU Fresno, the required courses are Chem 128A, 128B, and 129A.
  3. Biochemistry.  At CSU Fresno, the course is either Chem 150 or 155.
  4. English composition.  At CSU Fresno, the courses can be either Eng 5A and 5B or 10 plus 20.  Other combinations are possible.
  5. Many schools want a course in Psychology.  At CSU Fresno, most students take Psych 10

Are There Recommended Courses?
Some schools list recommended courses. You should check out the web sites of your target schools to see what they recommend. Some of the commonly recommended courses taught at CSU Fresno are Bio 120, Microbiology; Bio 143, Comparative Vertebrate Morphology; Bio 162 plus Bio 162L, Comparative Animal Physiology; and Bio 163, Advanced Human Physiology. Some students take the pre-nursing/pre physical therapy courses, Bio 64, Functional Human Anatomy and Bio 65, Human Physiology.

These courses are the classes the student must take prior to applying to the Fresno City College dental hygiene program. These seven prerequisite classes total 29 units. Some courses, such as the Anatomy & Physiology classes require prerequisites before they can be taken. The prerequisites for Anatomy and Physiology are BIOL 5 or BIOL 1. Although not necessary to apply for the dental hygiene program at Fresno City College, there are several other classes that will need to be completed before graduating from the program. Those classes are Intro to Sociology(3 units), General Psychology(3 units), and Speech(3 units).

The dental hygiene program administrators HIGHLY recommend that the student finish these courses prior to applying to the dental hygiene program, because the program is incredibly intensive, with little time left over to take additional courses. All classes must be completed with a minimum “C” grade.

Application Process

Selected students will be placed to start the program in Fall 2022.

All students, if accepted into the program, will be subject to the policies of the Dental Hygiene student handbook. Students should be aware that participation in the program requires adherence to infection control policies including the requirement that immunizations are current. After successful completion of the dental hygiene program including all general education and graduation requirements, students will earn an AS Degree in Dental Hygiene from Fresno City College. 

Step 2: Complete Dental Hygiene Application Requirements

Completion of science prerequisites with a C or better:

  • BIO 20-Human Anatomy and BIO 22-Human Physiology or BIOL 21A-Human Anatomy & Physiology I and BIOL 21B-Human Anatomy & Physiology II
  • CHEM 3A – Introductory General Chemistry
  • CHEM 3B – Introductory Organic & Biological Chemistry
  • BIOL 31 – Microbiology 

Dental Hygiene Board Wet Laboratory Waiver for prerequisites is extended to December 31, 2021.  This waiver removed an admission standard for dental hygiene educational programs that requires incoming students to have completed college-level biomedical science coursework with a “wet laboratory” (in-person lab) component in the subjects of anatomy, physiology, chemistry, biochemistry, and microbiology.

Spring 2022 – all science prerequisites will need to have an in-person lab component.

Completion of non-science prerequisites with a C or better:

  • ENGL 1A – Reading and Composition
  • MATH 103 – Foundations of Math or higher math course
  • PSY 2 – General Psychology
  • SOC 1A – Introduction to Sociology
  • FN 40 – Nutrition or equivalent
  • COMM 1 or 2 – Introduction to Public Speaking or Interpersonal Communication

GPA of 2.7 or above

  • A cumulative GPA calculation will be done using all college coursework document on all college/university transcripts.
  • Grade points and units will be tallied from all college work attempted.
  • Application requirements include the completion of all eleven (11) prerequisite courses and a cumulative GPA for 2.7 or above.
  • “In Progress” courses are not accepted. 
  • Advanced Placement (AP) courses are not accepted to meet pre-requisite requirements for this program.

Applicants with courses from outside State Center Community College District

Applicants who would like to use pre-requisite or general education courses completed from outside of SCCCD should meet with a Fresno City College Counselor.  The counselor will assist in determining whether the Course Substitution Petition process needs to be completed.  This process should be completed before applying to the Registered Nursing Programs or any Allied Health Program.
