Is It Hard To get into harvard PhD

it’s actually a bit harder to get into a Harvard PhD program from Harvard if you are in the same field, at least in the sciences. The main reason is, they want students to go explore and learn from different people/environments. My switch was from physics to biophysics, so it was fine, and a classmate was also in a similar boat. Also, if it’s going from undergrad to MD/PhD, my general sense (hard data like MCAT/GPA of incoming students who did Harvard undergrad vs something similar like MIT or Princeton is not available for analysis.) is that they don’t have that bias because they understand you want that MD from Harvard. In the softer sciences (bio/chem), there are many PhD students from undergrad institutions considered less competitive. I suspect many factors are involved, including good funding for many of those fields (e.g. NIH, collaborations with companies, philanthropic institutions) opening lots of spots, the need for lots of grunt work (sometimes you just need someone willing to work a lot and follow protocols carefully), and large amount of bio/biochem/chem/etc undergrads from good schools going to MD programs, industry, consulting, etc. I feel that certain other fields like math and physics might be a bit different in how hard they are to get in based on undergrad institution, but again it’s hard to get solid data on this.

For the class of graduate students entering in Fall 2020, SEAS received more than 4300 applications across all Ph.D. and master’s programs and admitted about ~7 percent of applicants. For enrolled students across all Ph.D. and master’s programs, average undergraduate GPA s were over 3.8 (on a 4.0 scale), average GRE quantitative scores were within the 90-95th percentiles, and average GRE verbal scores were within the 80-85th percentiles.  Due to the interdisciplinary nature of SEAS, students come with a variety of undergraduate majors. Common undergraduate majors include computer science, engineering (examples: mechanical, bio, electrical, and chemical), mathematics, physics, and chemistry.

2021 REQUIREMENTS

The concentration in Computer Science (CS) is comprised of the two following components:

Component 1: Foundational Courses

CS 110. Introduction to Computer Science I: Problem Solving and Programming for Scientists and Engineers CS 111. Introduction to Computer Science II: Data Structures and Object-Oriented Programming CS 211. Computer Organization and Assembly Language Programming CS 221. Systems Programming

To complete Component 1, students must successfully complete all 4 of these courses with a grade of B- or higher in each course. Students who are not successful in one or more of these courses may repeat that course once, but will be required to complete any remaining courses with a grade of B- or higher before registering for any other CS courses.

2021 CS Concentration Requirements

Starting in Fall 2021, Computer Science is rolling out new concentration requirements. These requirements include 2–5 courses in Mathematics, including mathematical preparation, Linear Algebra, and Probability. For the basic plan, 9 core computer science courses are also required, and collectively, they must meet requirements in formal reasoning, systems, computation and the world, and advanced computer science.
