Bioinformatics Education Programs in Canada
The Canadian Bioinformatics Workshops hosted represent a limited series of courses which have the advantages of being short, and delivered in a way to make them accessible to many in a timely fashion. Those who want to engage in a more formal program, at the collegial, undergraduate or graduate level are invited to explore the links below. These represent, to the best of our knowledge, what is currently offered in the public institutions across Canada. The list of institutions was taken from what was present on wikipedia in the fall of 2019
Additionally, even though a specific school may not have a program in bioinformatics (or computational biology, or biological data science), it may have very strong instructors or faculty members supervising students in this area, . What we present here is a community sourced presentations of Bioinformatics/computational biology programs offered in public Canadian Universities.
We currently only post on Bachelor, Masters and PhD programs. We only post what some colleges (or CEGEPs in Quebec), or Diplomas we have been informed about. Of course, all information about the Canadian Bioinformatics
Users of this page, or managers or participants in programs wanting to update this list are welcomed to communicate with us through this form, If you find a better link, a dead link, a missing link, or something you think is wrong, or you would like it improved, please let us know. This is a free community resource that we should all work to improve together.
This program is set within the framework of current interdisciplinary research conducted within Dalhousie. Students in this program will join a community of researchers in the fields of computational biology and bioinformatics. Resources from the Faculties of Computer Science, Medicine, and Science are coordinated to offer a flexible program, with a limited course load and an emphasis on research activities. Students from a broad selection of backgrounds are invited to consider the program. Each candidate is supervised within the research group of their supervisor from the beginning of their tenure.
Candidates for admission to the Masters of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics should hold an honours degree in any relevant discipline. Relevant disciplines are typically:
- Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
- Computer Science
The Master of Science in Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary program that combines the application of computer technology to the management and analysis of biological data. The result is that computers are being used to organize data generated from experiments into databases, develop new algorithms and software, and use this software for the interpretation and analysis of the data into meaningful biological information. For the past ten years, our M.Sc. program has been training students to organize, visualize, analyze and interpret biological data. Students have access to world renowned bioinformaticians at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and the BC Cancer Agency, and have exposure to the latest technologies to develop their skills.
Strategic Program Objectives:
- To build on British Columbia’s reputation and excellence in bioinformatics.
- To integrate bioinformatics into basic biology to further current research excellence in other life science sectors of the province.
- To foster collaborations locally, nationally and internationally.
