Entry level Education

The duration of the basic education is 3 years, equals 180 ECTS and corresponds to the 1st Bologna cycle.

The education leads to a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy. In Sweden, physiotherapist is a protected professional title that may be used only by those who hold a licence to practise. The requirements to enter the specialist program are a license to practice as a physiotherapist, BSc, two years of clinical experience and ongoing practice within the field of specialisation. The theoretical requirements for specialisation are MSc and relevant, documented courses within the area of specialisation. The clinical requirement is three years of supervised practice within the field of specialisation.

Specialisation can be obtained within 16 areas and more than 750 physiotherapists are specialists.

How do I become a Physiotherapist in Sweden?

There are many different kinds of physiotherapists in Sweden. Those who work with humans, and those who work with animals. The path to becoming a human physiotherapist is a long one, so I will discuss that today.

In order to become a physiotherapist in Sweden, you must first obtain a degree in Physical Education. This can be done at any university or college that offers this course. Some examples include the University of Gothenburg, Stockholm University and the University of Uppsala.

When you have completed your education, you must then take an examination to become certified by your country’s national health authority (Socialstyrelsen). You will need to pass this test before being eligible for licensure as an actual physiotherapist.

You must also take an examination for specialization: either an anatomy and physiology exam or an orthopedic exam. After passing both of these exams you will be able to apply for work as either a physical therapist specializing in human patients (Licensed Physiotherapist) or animal patients (Veterinary Physiotherapist).

Once you have passed both examinations, there are two paths you can take: 1) start working right away on getting licensed by Socialstyrelsen or 2) apply at another university

To become a physiotherapist in Sweden, a university education, i.e. a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy (BSc), is required, based on an entry-level of upper secondary school education (13 years).

The program will prepare you for a successful career with advanced assignments concerning the health problems of today and the future, and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle.

The program

This unique behavioral medicine specialization highlights the connection between lifestyle and health. You will be given the prerequisites for the implementation of evidence-based measures and work with planning, investigating and evaluating activities, in both the public and the private sectors. This specialization will also increase your opportunities to work with health promotion and you will be given the tools to work with change management.

You will study Physiotherapy against the background of the broader area of health and welfare. Issues concerning equality and participation, professional knowledge and development as well as creativity and innovation are in focus. You will also develop your understanding of leadership, groups, and organizations as well as evidence-based praxis and evaluation. The program is given in English and you will read the courses in Health and Welfare together with students from other Master’s programs and research studies. The program runs for two years but may be completed after one year with a Master’s degree of 60 credits.

The labor market in the public sector and in new areas are looking for well-educated and critically thinking, highly skilled people.
