The University was modelled on the American state university at a time when there were few universities in North America (only Harvard was older). Building on John Strachan’s earlier attempt to establish Toronto Academy and his vision for an Anglican institution within Upper Canada, it was chartered as “The Trustees of the McGill College of Montreal” on October 14, 1821.[4]
In 1829 it opened its doors to women,[5] becoming only the second higher education institution in British North America to do so after Yale University.[6] The university assumed its present name in 1843.[7][8](p58) In 1862 it merged with Victoria College; and 08 years later with Presbyterian College; resuming its original name.

Notably, it continues to be among the three Canadian universities to make up to the top-50 universities. Amidst such a tough situation, it is a remarkable achievement for the university to climb two positions higher outweighing other premier institutions in the race.
THE took into account nearly 1,400 institutions from over 92 countries and conferred the ranking based upon several factors like teaching quality, type of research conducted, number of citations, industry income, and international outlook.
In contrast to this, McGill’s performance in the QS World University Rankings has been on the downside since 2012. In 2020, the university toppled two ranks down from #33 to #35 sharing the position with University of California, Los Angeles. Despite the depreciation in the world ranking, it has shown considerable improvement in the subject-wise ranking of QS World University and stood at #3.
