MTSU Scholarship Application System

MTSU Freshman Guaranteed Scholarships

MTSU awards an array of academic merit scholarship opportunities based on ACT scores and GPA.

To be considered for a Freshman Guaranteed Scholarships, students must be a first-time incoming freshman who plans to enroll at MTSU in the Summer or Fall semester. Students must have ALL of the following on file with the Admissions Office by December 1 to be considered for a scholarship:

  • Admission application
  • Application fee paid
  • Qualifying official ACT and/or SAT test score (without the writing subscore)
    • Only ACT/SAT scores through the December test date are considered
  • Qualifying official sixth-semester high school transcript with cumulative GPA requirement
  • Must be US Citizen or permanent resident

No separate scholarship application is required for guaranteed academic scholarships. Student will receive notification of the scholarship award offer by February. To take advantage of the scholarship offer, students must accept the scholarship by May 1! Instructions of how to accept the scholarship will be included in the scholarship award notice.

MTSU Guaranteed Scholarships

The Buchanan Fellowship

The Buchanan Fellowship is awarded through the prestigious MTSU Honors College, and is the highest academic award given to an entering freshman at Middle Tennessee State University. Students must plan to enroll for the first time in the summer or fall semester to be eligible for the Buchanan Fellowship.

Buchanan Fellows must complete a separate application process that is administered through the Honors College. Fellows selected for participation enter the university as a part of an elite cohort and participate in a specially designed cohort curriculum of courses. Fellows receive a host of special benefits including a full tuition scholarship for up to 16 credits each semester, special seminars, priority registration, a book allowance, priority consideration for study abroad, and much more. The Buchanan Fellowship award is guaranteed for four years, providing you continue to meet all requirements.

To compete for a Buchanan Fellowship, an applicant must:

  • apply for undergraduate admission to Middle Tennessee
  • complete and return the Buchanan application form to the Honors College by December 1 of the year prior to fall enrollment
  • have a high school GPA greater than or equal to 3.5
  • have a composite ACT greater than or equal to 29 (or SAT equivalent)
    • Prior to March 2016- SAT score of 1280 (Critical Reading & Math)
    • March 2016 and future tests- SAT score of 1360 (Critical Reading & Math)
  • provide an official transcript of all high school work completed

MTSU DREAM Scholarship (Diverse Representation and Educational Access at MTSU)

Middle Tennessee State University values the richness of learning opportunities brought to our campus through diversity in our student body and faculty. To demonstrate that commitment and encourage the enrollment of students from populations underrepresented at MTSU, scholarships are offered to freshmen who will contribute to the creation and education of a diverse student body. For the purpose of this scholarship, diversity is considered to include (but is not limited to) any of the following: Veterans, Non-Traditional students, Disability status, First-generation college students, Gender identity/expression, Personal hardships, Race or ethnicity, sexual orientation or Special gifts or talents.

Through  state funds, recipients of the DREAM Scholarship will receive $2,000 per year for up to four years (maximum of eight semesters).

MTSU DREAM Scholarship eligibility requirements

  • An incoming freshman joining the university in the summer or fall semester
  • A Tennessee resident, and US citizen or permanent resident
  • A graduate of Tennessee high school or Tennessee homeschool

In addition, you must:

  • Meet current academic and other eligibility requirements for the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship as of the February 15 scholarship application deadline
  • Have an Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) of 12,000 or less on FAFSA
  • Enroll full-time for every fall and spring semester
  • You must apply for this scholarship by submitting the online Scholarship Application by February 15 to be considered for an award for the following academic year.  The Scholarship Application opens up every year on October 1st and closes around March 1st.

MTSU Foundation and departmental scholarships

MTSU offers approximately 700 endowed and other scholarships to approximately 2000 students each year through special programs sponsored by various academic and administrative departments. Application processes vary from department to department. Many of these Foundation and departmental scholarships require online applications or paper applications.

Foundation and departmental scholarship deadlines

Most scholarships have an application deadline of February 15. After a scholarship deadline has passed, the application for that scholarship will no longer be accepted.

Departmental scholarships of special interest

Information regarding four of our most popular areas of interest are noted below. Please be aware that this is not a comprehensive list, so you should contact departments of interest to ask about scholarship opportunities and search the website for other opportunities.

Foundation Graduate Student Scholarship

Application Deadline – April 1st of each year
Available for completing and submitting between January 1 – April 1

The MTSU Foundation Graduate Scholarship is established through the Senior Gift Program by graduating seniors of MTSU and for the purpose of providing scholarship support to graduate students of Middle Tennessee State University.  The number and the amount of the scholarships to be awarded shall be determined by the College of Graduate Studies Scholarship Committee and limited to the funds available in the spendable account.  Recipients receive the scholarship dollars for the fall semester.  In order to receive scholarship dollars for an additional semester, the recipient is expected to achieve a minimum of a 3.0 GPA in the preceding semester.  Each scholarship is for one academic year (fall and spring semesters) and may not be renewed beyond the one year.  Preference shall be given to students who participated in the Senior Gift Program before obtaining their undergraduate degree from MTSU.

To be eligible, a student must:

  • Have an undergraduate degree from Middle Tennessee State University.
  • Have an overall undergraduate grade point average of 3.5 or greater.
  • Be fully admitted as a graduate degree seeking student.
  • Submit a letter stating his or her career intent and a short statement of financial need.

Samuel H. Howard MBA Scholarship

Application Deadline – April 1st of each year
Available for completing and submitting between January 1 – April 1

The Samuel H. Howard MBA Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to African American students pursuing the MBA degree or provide financial assistance for African American students pursuing the MBA degree to participate in the National Black MBA Association, particularly attending annual conventions.  The number and the amount of the scholarships to be awarded shall be determined by the College of Graduate Studies Scholarship Committee and limited to the funds available in the spendable account.

To be eligible, a student must:

  • Be an African American graduate student pursuing the MBA degree.
  • Provide three letters of reference.
  • Provide a statement of financial need and a brief personal narrative supporting the application.

Tammy Jones Memorial Scholarship

Application Deadline – April 1st of each year
Available for completing and
submitting between January 1 – April 1

The Tammy Jones Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an incoming or current graduate student majoring in mathematics or vocal music at Middle Tennessee State University.  The number and the amount of the scholarships to be awarded shall be determined by the College of Graduate Studies Scholarship Committee and limited to the funds available in the spendable account.   This scholarship may be renewed for a maximum of one year.  Prior recipients must re-apply for consideration.

To be considered, a student must:

  • Be majoring in mathematics or vocal music at MTSU.
  • Provide a brief narrative supporting the application.

Mary W. and Chester R. Martin Graduate Academic Scholarship

Application Deadline – April 1st of each year for the fall award;
October 1st for the spring award

The Mary W. and Chester R. Martin Graduate Academic Scholarship emphasizes academic scholarship and leadership.  This scholarship, in the amount of $500, will be awarded each fall and spring semesters as a tuition grant.  This award is made for one semester only and is non-renewable.

To be eligible, a student must:

  • Be a first-semester graduate student.
  • Be a Tennessee or Kentucky resident.
  • Have graduated from an accredited, undergraduate institution with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater.
  • Be a full-time (enrolled for nine credit hours of graduate coursework) graduate student.
  • Provide three letters of reference giving supporting statements that the applicant displays evidence of exceptional promise for academic excellence and leadership.

Albert L. and Ethel Carver Smith Scholarship for Graduate Students

Application Deadline – April 1st of each year
Available for completing and submitting between January 1 – April 1

The Albert L. and Ethel Carver Smith Memorial Scholarship is awarded in the amount of $1000 for the first semester and is renewable for one additional semester contingent upon satisfactory academic progress.

To be eligible, You must:

  • Be fully admitted as a graduate degree seeking student.
  • Be enrolled as a full-time (nine credit hours of graduate coursework) graduate student.
  • Provide a statement of financial need and a brief personal narrative supporting the application.

Walton O. Warren Graduate Scholarship

Application Deadline – April 1st of each year
Available for completing and submitting between January 1 – April 1

The Walton O. Warren Graduate Scholarship is awarded annually in an amount determined by the College of Graduate Studies Scholarship Committee and limited to the funds available in the spendable account.

To be eligible, a student must:

  • Be a Tennessee resident.
  • Have earned a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Have a minimum of four (4) years of experience in the Tennessee public school system.
  • Be planning a career in the public schools of Tennessee.
  • Be admitted to graduate study.
  • Submit a personal narrative supporting the application. The narrative should address your goals for graduate study and how receiving the scholarship will aid in your personal and professional development.
  • Include a letter of endorsement from your school principal (on school letterhead) to your application. An administrator’s endorsement should come from the system superintendent (on letterhead).  It must verify the applicant’s number of years of public school teaching experience.  At a minimum, the endorsement should address why the applicant is deserving of the scholarship, how the award would contribute to the professional development of the applicant, and how the applicant’s school will benefit if the award is granted.  (Principals and superintendents may only endorse one applicant per year).
  • Submit official transcripts of all undergraduate work and any previous graduate work.

More Scholarships

AAIA Displaced Homemaker Scholarship

The Association on American Indian Affairs offers Displaced Homemaker Scholarships in the amount of $1000 each, to those men and women who would not otherwise be able to complete their educational goals due to family responsibilities. Funds may be used to assist with child care, transportation and basic living expenses, etc. in addition to educational costs. Disbursement is made during the first semester. Applicants must be full time students. This scholarship does not automatically renew. Students are eligible to apply on a yearly basis. Deadline for application is July 20.

Adult Students in Scholastic Transition (ASIST) Program

– The program provides financial support and guidance to adults in the community who are in a variety of transitional situations. To be eligible for the program, candidates must be able to identify their career goals and objectives along with meeting the necessary educational and financial requirements.

The Wal-Mart Higher REACH Scholarships

These are awarded to non-traditional students who have been employed by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. for at least one year as of February 1. Winners may receive up to $2,000 payable over one year (award amount varies depending on part-time or full-time enrollment).To be eligible for the program, candidates must be able to identify their career goals and objectives along with meeting the necessary educational and financial requirements.

Career Advancement Scholarship

The BPW Foundation created the Career Advancement Scholarship Program to award financial assistance to disadvantaged women who want to further their education. Scholarships are provided to women who wish to advance in their career, or will soon enter or re-enter the workforce.

EFWA (Accounting) Women in Transition (WIT) Scholarship

Eligible applicants will generally have few marketable job skills since they have functioned primarily in the role of a homemaker, or they do not possess a college degree. Applicants should be incoming or current freshman, or those returning to school with a freshman status. Recipients will be awarded up to $16,000 over 4 years to pursue a college degree in accounting. (this award is not being offered in 2009 due to economic considerations)
