Majors: General Dentistry
General Dentistry is a branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area, and the adjacent and associated structures. These may be accompanied by pain or other symptoms. The study and practice of general dentistry are also known as “family dentistry” because they focus on all ages while excluding specialties such as orthodontics or periodontics. Dentists specializing in this field are known as general practitioners or primary care dentists.
General dentists provide preventive care to maintain overall health; identify decay before it becomes a serious problem; diagnose oral cancer; provide emergency dental services for accidents caused by trauma or fractures; restore teeth through fillings or crowns after decay has been removed; perform extractions when necessary for correct dental placement (orthodontics); administer local anesthesia during dental procedures involving painful surgery-free removal of sutures from gums (gum surgery).
