Let’s jump right in and take a look at exactly how to get into Northwestern University.

Will you need to be an academic rockstar to call yourself a Wildcat? The short answer is yes. We’ll cover every aspect of how to get into Northwestern, but first, here are some facts about Northwestern admissions.

Northwestern Medill Acceptance Rate

Northwestern accepted 9 percent of its applicants for the Class of 2024, University spokesperson Jon Yates told The Daily in an email.

The acceptance rate dropped from 13 percent last year, when Northwestern accepted 1,931 students. The drop comes after a record-low acceptance rate of 8.9 percent in 2017, when Northwestern accepted 1,932 students out of 21,282 applicants.

The University received 41,033 applications this year and offered admission to 2,827 students. The top three undergraduate colleges chosen by admitted students are Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences with 1,107 admits; McCormick School of Engineering with 741 admits; and School of Communication with 613 admits.

This marks the second straight year in which Northwestern’s acceptance rate has risen, up from 8.9 percent last year and 8.4 percent the year before. This year’s figure matches the percentage of students accepted in 2017. That same year, the acceptance rate fell below double digits for the first time and has stayed there ever since.

The slight uptick in acceptance rates at Northwestern is endemic of trends at other selective institutions. This year, Harvard University accepted 4.9 percent of its applicants, up from 4.6 percent in 2019. Dartmouth College accepted 8.8 percent of its applicants, up from 7.9 percent in 2019. Yale University, Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania all saw similar rises.

Still, acceptance rates for Northwestern and other universities have fallen significantly over the last decade. In 2010, Northwestern accepted 23.1 percent of its applicants. That same year, Dartmouth accepted 15.4 percent of applicants. Harvard’s acceptance rate was at 9.3 percent.

This year, NU received a total of 39,261 applications for the Class of 2024 and admitted 3,542 students. Last year, the University received a record high of 40,579 total applications, up from the previous record set the year before.

Yates told The Daily that the University expects an incoming class of 1,975.

Students accepted via regular decision have until May 1 to make their college decisions. However, they’ll have little opportunity to visit campus beforehand due to the rampant spread of the novel coronavirus. Earlier this month, the University canceled Wildcat Days and other prospective student programming through mid-April.

Northwestern’s GPA Average

The average high school GPA of students admitted to Northwestern University is a 4.1.

To earn a GPA north of 4.0, you’ll have to be at the top of your class, earning straight-A’s all the way.

A good way to raise your GPA and push it over the 4.0 mark is to earn A’s in honors, IB, and/or AP courses. Depending on how your high school calculates GPA, A’s in these types of courses are awarded a higher value. In fact, it’s a good idea to take as many challenging, college-level courses as possible during high school. Excelling in them indicates to Northwestern that you are ready for the rigor of their academics.

Here’s something super important to keep in mind though: it’s very difficult to change your GPA beyond your sophomore year. So if Northwestern is your dream school, you’ll have to hit the ground running with straight-A’s early on.

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you plan to submit SAT scores to Northwestern:

  • Northwestern accepts SAT or ACT scores, but you can submit both if you’d like.

So for the best chance of getting accepted, you’ll want to score a 1540 or higher.

Other Important Factors

Journalism requires passion. While Medill does not require a bachelor’s degree in journalism or prior work experience in journalism, evidence of engagement with current events and an interest in finding and reporting stories is important. We believe these qualities are found in applicants with a broad variety of backgrounds, from those with long-held interests in journalism to those who have recently considered it.

Writing skills are also important. We look for students who not only write well, but also write engagingly.

At Medill, we prize good storytelling, and we like to see potential in that area no matter what platform an applicant has used so far.

Finally, multimedia skills, or a strong interest in developing them, are a plus. Medill’s graduate journalism curriculum emphasizes cross-platform skills. Openness to the storytelling possibilities in a variety of media is essential.

What are the minimum or average GPAs and GRE or GMAT test scores of admitted students?

We review each application file individually and holistically, considering test scores and GPAs in context with the rest of the file, including essays, resume and recommendations. We look for GRE and GMAT scores that are in line with or better than what might be expected based on prior academic performance. We look at undergraduate transcripts not just for the overall GPA, but also for the courses you took and how you performed in them.

Northwestern University Application Requirements

Northwestern is very selective with an acceptance rate of just 14 percent, so students seeking admissions must meet some tough criteria. Incoming freshmen must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited institution. First-year students must have at least four years of English, three years of math, three years of laboratory science, two years of social science, and two years of foreign language. Grade requirements aren’t posted, but freshmen at Northwestern have an average high school GPA over 3.5. Students also usually score over 2000 on the SAT or above 30 on the ACT.

Students wishing to transfer to Northwestern University must have completed a minimum of 24 transferrable semester hours at a regionally accredited institution. Applicants must have graduated from high school at least 12 months and finished one full academic year of college to qualify for transfer. Generally, students must have earned at least a 3.0 GPA for transferring their credits. Northwestern prefers to admit transfers who have completed the full range of liberal arts and sciences prior to applying.

Graduates looking to enroll at Northwestern must already hold a U.S. bachelor’s degree or a comparable non-U.S. degree from a regionally accredited college. Graduate students are required to possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, but some programs have even higher expectations. High-achieving students can be admitted with one quarter of undergraduate study remaining. Depending on the degree, Northwestern may mandate that students submit entrant test scores for the GRE or GMAT. Graduate business degrees at Northwestern typically prefer candidates with two or more years of full-time experience.

Before Northwestern’s specified deadlines, interested applicants should submit their application form with the following supplemental materials:

  • Official transcripts or academic records
  • Standardized testing scores
  • Two to three recommendation letters
  • A well-written statement of purpose on career objectives
  • The $95 non-refundable application fee (if not waived)
