Northwestern University Dental School

History

University Dental College was chartered in 1887, opening that fall with six students.  Through an agreement among Northwestern University, Chicago Medical College, and University Dental College, the UDC students were allowed to attend lectures at the other schools.   At a time when most dental programs were two years, UDC required three years, a policy which depressed enrollment.  By 1891 with enrollment at 19, UDC closed for lack of funds.

However that fall, Northwestern University, wishing to become more closely aligned with professional programs, added a reorganized UDC under the new name of Northwestern University Dental School. Due to the three-year program which was mandated by the National Association of Dental Faculties, enrollment reached 128 by 1895.

The three dental schools in Chicago in 1896 were the Northwestern College of Dental Surgery, the University College of Dentistry, and the American College of Dental Surgery. There had been discussions of merger between these three schools for some time. As a result, on October 15, 1895 Northwestern University was formed by the Sulzer brothers of Chicago who donated $500,000 to acquire the assets of the American College of Dental Surgery.

Throughout the Twentieth Century, Northwestern University Dental School grew to become one of the top five dental schools in the nation. But by the end of the century, rising costs caused many private universities to drop their dental departments. Thus in 2001, the Northwestern University closed. The University President, Henry Bienen stated that many factors went into the closing of NU’s dental school, including high new capital costs, budget deficits and lagging research.

About Northwestern University

Northwestern University is a private institution that was founded in 1851. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 8,194 (fall 2020), its setting is suburban, and the campus size is 231 acres. It utilizes a quarter-based academic calendar. Northwestern University’s ranking in the 2022 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, #9. Its tuition and fees are $60,984.

When it opened for business in 1855, Northwestern University had only two academic staff and 10 students. These were all male, but women have been admitted since 1869.

Northwestern owes its existence to the vision of its nine founders who, with no land, limited finances and little knowledge of higher education, determined to create a university for the vast Northwest Territory covering more than five of today’s states. They began planning in 1850 and, three years later, boldly went ahead and purchased a 379-acre site close to Lake Michigan and developed the campus at Evanston, named after a founder called John Evans.

From these small beginnings, Northwestern has developed into a leading private research university with a strong interdisciplinary culture and a commitment to teaching excellence. It now consists of 12 separate schools and colleges and is notable for its research strength in fields including neuroscience, nanotechnology, biotechnology and the development of new drugs. The main campus is still based at Evanston, 10 miles north of Chicago, although there is a smaller one in Chicago, so students enjoy all the stimulus and opportunities for personal and professional development provided by one of the world’s great cities. Since 2008, there has also been a third, satellite campus in Doha, Qatar.

Northwestern’s mascot is Willy the Wildcat. Its mottoes are both taken from the New Testament and read, in Latin and Greek, “Whatsoever things are true” and “The world is full of grace and truth”.

Celebrated alumni include novelist Saul Bellow and economist George Stigler, who both went on to win Nobel Prizes, as well as Friends star David Schwimmer, Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, and George R. R. Martin, whose novels inspired the Game of Thrones television series. No fewer than four economists and one chemist who worked as faculty at Northwestern went to receive Nobel Prizes. And the diplomat and political scientist Ralph Bunce, who had been a researcher there, went on to become the first African American to win a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Northwestern University is a Division I school in the Big Ten athletic conference. Northwestern’s women’s lacrosse team has won multiple NCAA national championships. The school has hundreds of campus organizations to fulfill students’ varied interests. All first-year students are required to live on campus for two years. The school’s 10 residential colleges offer thematic living quarters for social and academic programming. Northwestern’s main campuses are located along Lake Michigan in Evanston and Chicago. In 2008, Northwestern opened a third branch in Doha, Qatar.

Of Northwestern’s dozen schools, nine offer undergraduate programs and 10 offer graduate and professional programs. Northwestern’s highly-ranked graduate schools include the Kellogg School of Management, the School of Education and Social Policy, the Pritzker School of Law, the Feinberg School of Medicine, the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Interdepartmental Biological Sciences Program. Northwestern’s Medill School is known for its strong journalism graduate program. Northwestern’s Dance Marathon, created in 1975, is one of the largest student-run philanthropies in the country and has raised more than $20 million for Chicago-area charities. Notable alumni include the 55th mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel; retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens; Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex; ESPN commentator Michael Wilbon; comedian Stephen Colbert; and president and COO of SpaceX, Gwynne Shotwell.
