The Norwegian School of Veterinary Science offers several courses in the fields of animal welfare and veterinary sciences. The college was founded in 1935 and is the only college in Norway that provides education and training to veterinary surgeons and nurses. Most of the veterinary research in the country is undertaken at the college. It is a state owned college, which has a university status. There are more than 450 students in the college at present.
The college is divided into four main departments of study. These include Basic Sciences and Aquatic Medicine, Food Safety and Infection Biology, Companion Animal Clinical Sciences and Production Animal Clinical Sciences. Apart from these departments of teaching, the college also has a central clinical laboratory and a section for laboratory animals. It also runs several veterinary hospitals and clinics all over Oslo.
The Norwegian School of Veterinary Science specializes in veterinary medicine and nursing. It also offers two international Master’s degrees in Food Safety and Aquatic Medicine. The PhD program is a three-year course, where an additional year has to be spent in teaching in the college. The college has an extensive library for research and provides free Internet access. It recommends students to bring their own laptops. Scholarships are available for a select few eligible students. The school also provides extra training for foreign veterinarians, who wish to get authorization to practice in Norway.

First established in 1935, the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science (NVH) is the only institution in Norway that is authorized to offer education and award professional and PhD degrees within the field of veterinary medicine and related sciences. The school is also responsible for the major part of all veterinary research conducted in the country. NVH is a state owned, autonomous institution of higher education, with university level status. The school has a student body of 470, including 80 doctoral students. NVH has four academic departments, all involved in teaching and research: Department of Basic Sciences & Aquatic Medicine Department of Food Safety & Infection Biology Department of Production Animal Clinical Sciences Department of Companion Animal Clinical Sciences While the main campus is based at Adamstua in Oslo, the Sections for Artic Veterinary Medicine and Small Ruminants are based, respectively, in Tromsø above the arctic circle, and Sandnes in the south west of the country. In addition, the school runs the national animal hospital and several other clinics serving patients in and around the Oslo area. It also incorporates the central clinical laboratory, the Section for Laboratory Animals, and various other diagnostic clinics and teaching and research stations. Degree title: Cand. Med. Vet. This is a five and a half year professional degree programme. Successful candidates become qualified veterinary surgeons. Admission Requirements A school leaving certificate incorporating mathematics and chemistry is required. Applicants must be fluent in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. Admission is based on final school grades and is highly competitive.
