PhD In Economics France

A doctorate usually means that an individual is qualified to teach at a college level or to work in a specific field of work. There are two major types of doctoral degrees; a research-oriented degree, and a professional doctoral degree. Doctoral degrees are sometimes referred to as terminal degrees, which means that a final degree is available in a graduate school for students who wish it.

Economics degrees investigate all factors involved in the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. Economics analyses both small scale (Microeconomics) and global (Macroeconomics) economic factors. Degrees in Economics offered by universities and colleges worldwide teach students how to optimise all economic actions in order to improve the well-being and prosperity of economic entities and consumers.

Who should study a Economics degree? Of course, you should be comfortable with using Math and numbers, but Economics is more than that. An Economics degree might be right for you if you are ready to change the way you look at the world and understand the dynamics of how human behaviour shapes our way of life. Economics is a versatile subject that connects to a wide range of other disciplines, and also a sort of universal language that can be applied in many contexts.

You can specialise in a wide range of subjects such as Financial Economics, Labour Economics, International Economics, Business Economics, International Economics, Environmental Economics, Development Economics, Econometrics, and much more.

Economics Classes And Skills

While studying an Economics degree you will attend a variety of classes which vary depending on the university you’ll be attending. Some general classes you are bound to run into include: Game Theory, Foundations of Macroeconomics and Microeconomics, Economic Development and Resource Economics, Statistics and Calculus, and more.

Because Economics is such a broad and overarching field, it has the potential to help students develop a lot of skills they can use in their future careers. You’ll learn how cu evaluate and calculate risk, make predictions about how certain factors will influence the behaviour of society. You’ll become familiar with mathematical models and how to use them, while developing your skills for analysis and synthesis. Economics studies also create a strong basis for future Business studies, due to the deep understanding of market dynamics. Most of all, you’ll learn how to best communicate your findings and ideas to people who are not experts in the field but need your insight to make business decisions.

The PhD in Economics at Sciences Po, supported by the Department of Economics, is now one of the very best European programs, as reflected by the recent recruitment of our students by top universities (UCLA, ENS Paris, HEC Paris, Carlos III).

This programme is designed to provide world-class theoretical and practical training in economics. It rains highly qualified economists for academic careers, and for careers that require the highest quality of doctoral training: international irganisations, think tanks, research organisations, public ministries, banks, insurers, etc.

Objectives

The PhD program in economics trains top economists who seek to pursue university and academic careers in France or abroad, as well as careers requiring high-level doctoral training: in international organizations, think tanks, research institutions, government agencies, banks, and insurance companies.

Students seeking to pursue an international academic career are supported throughout the job market process. Many oral and written communication skills trainings are offered and members of the department of economics help prepare students for interviews and seminars.

Integration With The Economics Department

Students are affiliated with the Department of Economics, which provides them with a workspace and the best environment for drafting their dissertation. A professor from the Department of Economics serves as a primary supervisor to help guide their research. Their dissertation committee includes two additional professors.

Through the program’s seminars, doctoral workshops and research events, doctoral students fully participate in the Department of Economics’ activities. PhD students are in constant contact with the many invited professors. A very small number of applicants are admitted, allowing for greater attention and guidance for each student: an individualisation of each student’s path for the success of all.

Structure Of The Programs

The doctoral program in economics should ideally be completed in three years.

Candidates who do not yet hold a Masters degree must apply for the Masters in Economics. Those who select this option will receive a “Masters in Economics” from Sciences Po at the end of their second year and will be able to apply to the PhD program.

Candidates who already hold a Masters degree from Sciences Po or another world-class university may directly apply to the PhD program.

The 3 doctoral years:

During the three years devoted to the dissertation, PhD students are hosted by the Department of Economics and can pursue study abroad at partner international universities such as Princeton University, the University of Chicago and the London School of Economics.

The department organizes an internal seminar at which students are invited to make presentations. They may also attend the department’s various other seminars.

Economics Careers

While an Economics degree is a great source of information and expertise, it doesn’t limit itself to a specific career after graduation. Numerous fields are waiting for economic graduates in the public and private sectors. You will find work in the government, banks, business journals, or in higher education if you plan of pursuing a PhD in Economics, later on. You will be able to target job titles like economist, consultant, economic analyst, researcher, financial or business analyst or stock market specialist. Economics degree graduates can make use of their Bachelor’s education in other disciplines like Accounting, Auditing, Insurance, Management, Advertising, Actuaria Science, and more.

First year

The “Doctoral track” (Master 2 ETE) allows students to acquire a thorough and advanced general training in economic theory (micro, macro and econometrics) before choosing a specific area of research. During this first year, students are also given training in research techniques and work one-on-one with a faculty advisor to complete a master’s thesis that will be assessed by a board of professors.

Second year

At the end of the first year, students are admitted in the second year DEEQA on the basis of their results (courses and research work) and embark on a final year of advanced, specialized courses. Students should select 7 course topics among a list of advanced specialized courses and attend an annual research workshop (members meet on a regular basis during the year).
This intensive training should provide PhD students with a strong foundation for the writing of their thesis and for their future research career. An advisor and another faculty member assist students in the design of their plan of studies. During the second year, students choose their field(s) of specialization :

  • Behavioral and Experimental Economics
  • Econometrics and Empirical Economics
  • Economics Theory
  • Finance
  • Industrial Organization
  • Macroeconomics
  • Public Policy and Applied Economics

At the end of this second year, students must present some original research work (a preliminary paper) to a jury of faculty members.

Thesis years

The two or three following years are devoted to full-time research and to writing the dissertation. Students are given the opportunity to mature and develop their economist’s intuition and techniques. PhD students participate in the life of academic groups, including seminars. They also present their research work in junior seminars and international conferences and are encouraged to participate in specialized summer schools.
