What is GRE?

Independent and nonprofit organization Educational Testing Service (ETS) developed and has been facilitating GRE (Graduate Record Exam) since 1948 (Grad School Center, n.d.). This multiple-choice, computer-based, standardized exam tests students’ analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning skills. Scores range between 130 and 170, where the top 10% of all students score 164 on average.

What is GMAT/GRE waiver?

Prospective applicants who possess outstanding work experience and/or military experience can avail themselves of a GMAT waiver, which enables them to apply for admission without submitting their GMAT/GRE scores.

An applicant can choose not to submit their GRE/GMAT test scores as a way of proving their readiness for an MBA. Instead, their suitability for the academic rigor of an MBA program can be assessed through factors such as academic accomplishments, completion of short courses, undergraduate GPA, work experience, or strong leadership experience. It is important to note that the GRE/GMAT waiver option is available for applicants who meet certain criteria.

Applying to Graduate School

Graduate school literature, posters and information-request postcards can be found in the Masters Hall Student Lounge (Room 206) and online from those schools of interest. Physics faculty members/advisors can provide additional information. In addition, Graduate Programs in Physics, Astronomy and Related Fields, published by the American Institute of Physics. lists graduate programs by specific field of interest.

  • Representatives from various graduate schools come to the campus, usually during the fall semester, and hold brief, informal sessions for seniors interested in attending their schools. These sessions are also excellent sources of general information.
    • Notices of these sessions are normally advertised in the Gettysburgian and online; any physics senior who is contemplating graduate school should attend them.
  • After initial research, the faculty suggests narrowing one’s choices down to five or six universities. Some students prefer to apply to at least one institution where the competition is strong, and to one where acceptance is believed to be more certain. Advisors can offer information as to the competitiveness of an institution; The American Institute of Physics (AIP) also provides information about graduate requirements.
  • Most schools request at least three references; faculty members who know a student’s work can write recommendations. The Center for Career Engagement can help applicants prepare an information sheet or résumé.
  • Requests for information about financial aid, assistantship programs and scholarships should be made at the time of application.
  • International students should include this information in their applications; it may also be beneficial to request information on financial aid for continuing education from pertinent consular officials in the U.S.

Notices of acceptance to graduate school usually arrive in mid to late April. If you receive more than one acceptance, the department suggests that you write promptly to those schools not chosen, so that the offer of admission can be extended to someone else.

Are graduate schools that don’t require GRE scores well-respected?

Universities without GRE requirements may still be difficult to get admitted into. They may impose more stringent and more competitive mandates, such as a higher GPA, more extracurricular activities, more relevant work experience, and so on (EDsmart, n.d.). Other factors that make a school well-respected despite not having GRE requirements are listed below.

Recognized by accrediting bodies that endorse GRE

Schools with no GRE masters programs still have a reputation to maintain. In fact, these schools only implement ‘no GRE’ as a part of their admission rule because they are recognized by the same accrediting bodies that endorse GRE.

Same standards of pedagogical excellence

Higher institutes in the U.S. need to abide with and submit to policies as other institutes, and this is why graduate schools are recognized by the same accrediting bodies.

GRE doesn’t measure future educational success

Many graduate schools do not focus much on GRE because the latest studies suggest that GRE doesn’t promise success in the future. There are also views posing that a student’s potential cannot be gauged by one exam such as GRE (Grad School Center, n.d.).

GRE is usually misinterpreted by admissions committees

Recent research also indicates that GRE is usually misinterpreted by admission committees, especially those that are too score-reliant.

Graduate Programs That Don’t Require The Physics GRE

Didn’t do so well on the Physics subject GRE? Don’t give up hope. There are plenty of graduate programs that don’t take the exam too seriously or don’t require it at all.

Below we include a list of physics programs and programs with heavily physics-related research that do not require the physics GRE to varying extents. Most programs outside of North America do not require the physics GRE.

In rare cases, a student is not able to take the physics GRE on any of the three dates it was offered because of an extenuating circumstance such as a major emergency or a severe medical problem. This should not deter you from applying to graduate school this year – universities will still give your application full consideration without the score. You and your advisor should contact the universities to which you are applying to ask. You also need to explain the situation in your personal statement.

Here’s a nice chart some random person on the interwebs has created and maintains with some universities’ physics GRE policies (not all this information is guaranteed to be up-to-date, so you really need to do the research on your own for everywhere you’re interested in.

Physics GRE not required
  • Space sciences and astrophysics programs
    • A few astrophysics programs
    • Some astronomy programs
    • Most planetary sciences programs
  • Certain programs of interest to aspiring applied physicists
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Mechanical engineering and materials science
    • Aeronautical engineering
    • Nuclear engineering
    • Applied mathematics
  • Most programs outside of North America
Physics GRE recommended or strongly recommended
  • most Applied Physics programs in the U.S.
  • Some programs in Canada
  • Some lower-tier, fewer mid-tier, and very few upper-mid tier Pure Physics programs in the U.S. (but none of the top 10 as ranked by USNWR)
  • Wash. U.’s physics department (as of 2017)
