Entry Requirements
Admissions to Southern starts with an application. Part of the application process is evaluating what education you’ve already received to ensure you start well at Southern. Here are the two simple admission requirements to start at Southern:
ACT Or SAT Score
Students must have a minimum composite score of 18 on the ACT or a minimum total score of 940 on the new SAT.
- For 2017 applicants, Southern will accept both the new SAT and the old SAT. We will compare your scores using concordance tables to determine your highest scores on either the new SAT or the old SAT.
- Sending your scores each time you take the SAT can benefit you by allowing Southern to consider you for all available enrollment-related opportunities.
Applicants for admission as new or transfer students must meet the criteria listed above. Homeschool students and international students have a few extra steps to qualify for admission.
High School Transcript Or GED
Submit an official transcript indicating graduation from an approved secondary school (accredited by an agency approved by the U.S. Department of Education or by the Canadian Education Ministry; Home Study International is approved) with a GPA of at least 2.50 in major subjects.
Required High School Subjects
- English: 3 units, excluding journalism and communication.
- Mathematics: 2 units. If Algebra 1 has not been taken, MATH 080 is required.
- Natural Science: 2 units. If two units of science are not completed at the high-school level, a college class in biology, chemistry, or physics must be taken in addition to general education science requirements.
- Social Science: 2 units. If one of these units is not world history, HIST 175, 175, 364, 365, 374, 375, 386, 387, or 388 must be taken as part of the general education requirements.
- Foreign Language: 2 units are required for a Bachelor of Arts degree. If two units are not completed at the high-school level, two years of a foreign language at the college level are required.
- Computer competency is strongly recommended.
GED Requirements
If applicable, submit a GED test minimum score of 410 on each section and an average of 450 overall (or 2250 total standard score points). GED applicants must submit an official transcript from the high school most recently attended.
