About
Sungkyunkwan University is a well-recognised private comprehensive research university which is located in South Korea. The origins of the university are traced back to the historical Sungkyunkwan which was founded in the year 1398 by the Joseon Dynasty. Being regarded as the Joseon Kingdom’s foremost educational institution, it was governed by a great code of the state administration. The institution was restructured and reorganised into a university in the late 19th century. Since then, it has expanded its course offerings and reputation which has been attributed to strong research output, numerous influential graduates and close partnership with Samsung. Sungkyunkwan University is one of the premier universities of the country which has consistently maintained its reputation at an international level too.
Sungkyunkwan University has two campuses Humanities and Social Sciences Campus. Both the campuses are equipped with facilities that are considered conducive for learning. At Natural Sciences campus, located in Suwon, there is a Learning Factory where creative ideas can be crafted into a prototype product with the help of laser cutters, 3D printers, Arduino and CNC router. Even on-campus dormitories are offered by the institution to its students. Humanities and Social Sciences campus, situated at Seoul, offers 10 dormitories and housing facilities whereas the Natural Sciences campus offers five dormitories.
Sungkyunkwan University offers general, special and professional level programmes for the students to choose from. These courses are offered across a variety of disciplines such as Law, Liberal Arts, Economics, Social Sciences, Engineering, Software, Pharmacy, Sport Science and several others. The institution witnesses a high number of international students constituting about ten per cent of the total undergraduate student body. In the year 2011, the population of international students at the university surpassed 1,000. About 2700 international students were enrolled in the institution in 2013. The institution maintains partnerships with about 653 universities and has agreements with 21 overseas institutions for offering dual-degree programmes.
Apart from imparting quality education, the university is also popular for its distinguished alumni members who have significantly contributed to their respective fields. Some of the notable members of the college’ alumni family include former Prime Minister of South Korea Hwang Kyo-ahn, Poet and Diplomat Ko Chang-soo, Minister of Unification Kim Yeon-chul, scholar Yu Seong-ryong and professional golfer Kim Mi-Hyun and many others.
