Bachelor of Scienceย (this includes freshman and transfer)
The B.S. Prelicensure program is designed to prepare students for a career in professional nursing practice. This is a traditional, four-year program beginning in the freshman year. A limited number of transfer students are accepted annually. Graduates of the B.S. program are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX) to beย licensed as a registered nurse (R.N.) and may apply for theย Public Health Nursing Certificateย from the California Board of Registered Nursing. The BS program is a UCLA-certified capstone major. During the last clinical course in the 4th year, each student plans and implements a Clincially-based Scholarly Project designed to improve the system of care provided to patients and their families.ย
Students successfully completing the B.S. degree also acquire an educational foundation for entry into the master’s program that prepares nurses for advanced practice roles such as nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and administrators in primary and acute care.

Masterโs Entry Clinical Nurse (MECN)
The UCLA School of Nursing has an option within the Master of Science in Nursing degree program that is designed to prepare individuals with a baccalaureate degree in another discipline for a career in nursing. This two-year pre-licensure program includes summer enrollment between the first and second years.ย Those who complete the program are granted the Master in Science in Nursing (MSN) degree and are eligible to take theย National Council Licensing Examination(NCLEX) to beย licensed asย registered nursesย (RN). They are then prepared to practice nursing at the bedside in a hospital setting.
Graduates of the program are also qualified to take theย Clinical Nurse Leaderย certification exam given by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and may apply for aย Public Health Nursing Certificateย from the California Board of Registered Nursing.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) โ Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)
The School of Nursing offers a two-year course of graduate study leading to the Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) designed to prepare registered nurses with a bachelor’s degree in nursing for advanced practice. The M.S.N. Advanced Practice Registered Nurse/Postlicensure program prepares nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists for the national certification examinations in the specialty that they are admitted into.
Advanced practice specialties offered through the UCLA School of Nursing are as follows:

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The UCLA School of Nursing (SON) offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree program with the goal in developing the foundation of knowledge upon which the practice of the profession is based. The UCLA SON PhD program aims to develop nurse scientists who can conduct research and generate theory that incorporate the influence of the biologic, psychosocial and physical environments on health and healthcare. Areas of focus and interest include, but are not limited to: health of diverse and vulnerable populations, older adults, and persons with chronic and communicable diseases.
Doctoral graduates serve as leaders who educate, influence practice, advance science, optimize healthcare delivery and influence healthcare policy worldwide.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
A DNP is a doctorally prepared, advanced practice nurse and a clinical expert and leader on the translation of evidence-base practice to improve health outcomes on a systems level. The DNP degree program is a clinical practice program for working professional nurses. You will integrate competencies for advanced nursing practice roles in clinical practice, leadership, health policy and education, as well as further develop your scholarship capacity in the area of evidence-based practice.

Post Master’s Certificate – Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitionerย
The Multi-Campus PMHNP Post-Masterโs Certificate curriculum is competency based and aligned with the National Organization for Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) core and population specific competencies which include: scientific foundations, leadership, quality, practice inquiry, technology and information literacy, policy, health delivery system and ethics. The curriculum is built upon a framework which supports trainee knowledge, skills, and attitude for development of the PMHNP role. This is supported through didactic content and a workplace-based clinical internship. The curricular framework and descriptions are:
- PMHNP role development: To build excellence in practice as a PMHNP
- Interprofessional collaboration: To support communication and collaboration across professions
- Structural competency: To create healthcare citizens who understand the effect of social inequity, racism, and limited access to mental health care on individuals and communities
- Self-reflective practice: To gain awareness of self, other and situation in the context of professional identity and role development

M.S.N. MECN – ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applications for Fall 2022 are now available atย www.grad.ucla.eduย and will have a November 1, 2021 deadline.
M.S.N./Master’s Entry Clinical Nurse applicants must provide evidence of the following:
1. Graduation from a recognized college or university having an accredited baccalaureate program satisfactory to the School of Nursing and the UCLA Graduate Division with an overall scholastic average of B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better, or graduation with a baccalaureate degree from an international institution with a program satisfactory to the School of Nursing and the UCLA Graduate Division.
Completion ofย approved prerequisite coursesย or equivalent with a minimum grade of C in the subjects listed below.ย All applicants to the MECN program must complete all approved prerequisite courses (other than Epidemiology) by the end of December 2021 for the Fall 2022 entry. AP course credit will only be accepted for one prerequisite course.ย

- Human Anatomy (UCLA Physiological Science 13 or Nursing 13) (NURSING 13 ONLINE COURSE OFFERED IN SUMMER SESSION)
- Human Physiology (UCLA Physiological Science 3 or Nursing 3) (NURSING 3 ONLINE COURSE OFFERED IN SUMMER SESSION) (5-year time limit – to entry date)

- English Composition or Writing (2 courses)
- Group and/or Verbal Communication (UCLA Communication Studies 1 or 10)
2. Personal and academic competence attested through three letters of recommendation.
3. Since written and verbal communication skills are basic to the practice of nursing, it is essential that applicants read, write and speak English well. International applicants from a country in which English is not the first language and medium of instruction are required to pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of at least 87 on the internet-based test, 220 on the computer-based test or 560 paper-based test or complete International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic examination with an overall band score of 7.0 or higher. Scores must be submitted prior to consideration for admission.
Applicants with Military Experience
UCLA School of Nursing will accept qualified student applicants who have completed relevant military education and experiences, have met the University admission requirements, and who present documented equivalency courses.
