Unitec Institute of Technology is situated in the city of Auckland, New Zealand and serves as the largest technological institute in the city. The institute was started in 1976 as Carrington Technical Institute but later in 1987, it was renamed to Carrington Polytechnic. Finally, in 1994, the institute was called ‘Unitec Institute of Technology’. In 1999, the institute applied for University status but due to some issues, it remained as an Institute of Technology. Now, the academic institute is a part of the International Association of Universities.

The core campus of the institute is situated in Mt Albert. It has several major academic and departmental buildings. The institute has an additional campus in Henderson. The institute is home to a large and diverse student population. It offers education facilities to more than 16,800 students. It provides several programs from certificate to postgraduate degree level across a range of subjects from architecture, accounting to zookeeping. It also offers programs abroad.

Students can choose from 70 programs including 14 master’s degrees programs, 19 bachelors’ degree programs, 17 postgraduate and graduate diplomas and certificates. Also, the institute maintains a Learning Centre that provides support to improve academic reading and writing. The institute is known for offering some popular programs in Engineering, Performing Arts, Commerce & Banking, Management, Media & Mass Communication, Vocational, Science, Nursing, Education, Paramedical, Arts and Hotel Management.

Also, the Unitec Institute of Technology provides various student services including a range of clubs and sports. It has a Student Council that connects with staff and services, government and media to the benefit of students and their interests. It improves student’s experiences collaborating with the management and services. Also, the institute comes with three libraries across the two existing campuses.

These libraries house a wide range of resources for programs including business, communication, natural sciences, education, osteopathy, sports, computing, construction, languages, and trades. Moreover, it has a special collection of Te Kohinga M?ori. Apart from this, the institute has proudly graduated some of the known people who are now working in different areas of the world. Some of the prominent alumni include Sara Wiseman (actress), Chris Petrovski (Macedonian actor), Aupito Tofae Su’a William Sio (a member of the New Zealand House of Representatives), Rajeev Verma (Indian actor) and Jake Heenan (rugby union player)

aut scholarships

Auckland University of Technology (AUT) provides scholarships to recognise and support high achieving international students as they begin their journey in becoming great graduates of AUT.

Selection criteria:

  • 1. Applicants must be full-fee paying international students (Note: International students are students who are neither citizens, permanent residents nor resident visa holders of New Zealand or Australia) or in the process of applying for the aforementioned categories. 2. Applicants must have a current and valid conditional or unconditional offer to study an AUT programme (Undergraduate level or above, excluding doctoral and at least 120 points). 3. Applicants will be asked to provide their AUT Student ID in the box provided on the application form. 4. Scholarships are awarded on academic merit. 5. Applicants with an equivalent GPA of 6.0 out of 9.0 (B+ average) or above in their most recent qualification/programme will be considered. 6. Returning AUT students (i.e. students who have already commenced study at AUT (excluding AUT International House GIE English pathway programmes)) will not be considered. 7. Applicants are required to declare if they have applied for other forms of scholarships both internally (i.e. awarded by AUT) and externally (e.g. government scholarships). The selection committee will take this into consideration.

General Information:

How do students apply?
Application is through the AUT online scholarship portal. Applicants must complete the AUT International Excellence Scholarship application online from the link provided on this page.   Applicants will be asked to indicate under which category (select one only) they wish to be considered and must meet the eligibility criteria for the category under which they are applying.   Applicants are required to upload:

1. Detailed academic transcript with grading scale of the most recent qualification.

2. Current and valid conditional or unconditional offer to study at an AUT programme (Degree, Postgraduate, AUT Study Abroad, GIE – refer to Regulations for full details).

3. For Undergraduate Excellence and English Pathway Excellence categories, the applicant’s graduation certificate or evidence of completion if applicable.

Decision makers
Applications in all categories will be shortlisted and selected by the selection committee comprising of representatives from AUT International.  Selection will be based on demonstrated academic excellence.  The country of origin of the applicant may be considered by the selection committee to align with AUT’s strategic aims.  Applicants who have declared other forms of scholarships both internally (i.e. awarded by AUT) and externally (e.g. government scholarships) will be considered on a case-by-case basis regarding eligibility.  

How and when do students learn of the decision?
Applicants will be notified of the outcome by email from the University Scholarships Office as soon as possible after the panel have meet.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The award of this scholarship is conditional on the student gaining entry to an AUT programme (duration of at least 120 points, except for Study Abroad and GIE programmes) as listed in each of the categories above. The scholarship will be paid as either: Option 1: a compulsory fees credit towards the first semester of study at AUT; or Option 2: a contribution towards accommodation in an approved AUT Halls of residence, subject to applicant securing an offer of accommodation. Recipients of this scholarship are required to be enrolled full time at AUT during the tenure of the scholarship. Failure to do so may result in the recipient being required to pay back the full value of the scholarship received.
