Eligibility Criteria

  • The Scholarship may be awarded each year to students enrolled full-time at the University of Auckland for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy or another approved Doctorate.
  • The Scholarship is tenable by students who are Canadian or British citizens and who are eligible to undertake doctoral study at the domestic fees rate.

A Scholarship will be tenable for a maximum of thirty-six months for a PhD candidate. The exact tenure will be stipulated by the Scholarships Committee on a case by case basis as awards are made.

The main purpose of the Scholarship is to attract new international students of high calibre to enrol in undergraduate or postgraduate taught study of one year or more at the University of Auckland.

Faculty of Arts International Masters Degree Scholarship

Up to five of these scholarships are awarded annually to international students, each for the duration of one year, to the value of up to $10,000 per annum.

University of Auckland International Student Excellence Scholarship

Up to 50 of these scholarships are awarded annually to international students undertaking an undergraduate degree, a postgraduate diploma or taught masters, to the value of up to $10,000 per annum.

Development Scholarships

Development scholarships provide an opportunity for students from selected developing countries to pursue studies in development-related fields.

Upon completion of their programmes, students are expected to return and contribute to the economic and social development of their home countries.

Currently we have scholarships funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) – Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) with financing from the Government of Japan.

Our postgraduate scholarships are some of the most generous on offer in New Zealand and we continue to grow the number of postgraduate scholarships available, making around 200 offers for University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarships each year.

How to apply

Apply for admission to your postgraduate programme of choice, and the University will consider your eligibility for a scholarship at the same time.

Because you apply for the scholarship and the programme together, there are no separate closing dates. You just need to meet the closing date for admission to your chosen postgraduate programme.

Eligibility

Postgraduate honours, postgraduate diplomas and masters

We offer guaranteed postgraduate scholarships to New Zealand citizen and permanent resident research students who meet grade point average (GPA) thresholds from their qualifying programme.

Doctoral

We offer guaranteed scholarships to new domestic doctoral and international PhD applicants who meet grade point average (GPA) thresholds in their qualifying programme from a New Zealand university.

  • You are considered a domestic student if you are a citizen of New Zealand or Australia, or a Permanent Resident of Australia or New Zealand.

University of Auckland Postgraduate Honours/PGDip Scholarships

Scholarship value: $13,520 (tax-free) plus the cost of your compulsory fees.

  • Students who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents with a GPA of 8.0 (‘A’ grade) or higher in an undergraduate degree from a recognised university. 
  • Applying for an honours degree or an approved postgraduate diploma with a research component of at least 30 points at the University of Auckland.

University of Auckland Research Masters Scholarships

Scholarship value: $13,520 (tax-free) plus the cost of your compulsory fees.

  • Research students who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents with a GPA of 8.0 (‘A’ grade) or higher in their qualifying programme from a recognised university.
  • Applying for a masters degree with a research component of at least 90 points at the University of Auckland.

University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarships

Scholarship value: $28,500 p.a. (tax-free) for three years plus the cost of your compulsory fees (a six-month extension may be available).

  • Domestic and international students with a GPA of 8.0 (โ€˜Aโ€™ grade) or higher in their qualifying programme from a New Zealand university
  • Applying for a PhD at the University of Auckland. Domestic applicants may also apply for a named doctorate at the University of Auckland.

High-achieving students, whose qualifying programme isnโ€™t from a New Zealand university, will be considered for, but are not guaranteed, a scholarship. The University will review the grades the student achieved in their qualifying programme and convert those into a University of Auckland equivalent. It will also consider the studentโ€™s academic references and the standing of the institution at which the qualifying programme was completed.

Mฤori students

University of Auckland Mฤori Postgraduate Scholarships

Scholarship value: $13,520 p.a. (tax-free) plus the cost of your compulsory fees.

  • Mฤori students who are citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand with a GPA of 7.5 or higher in their qualifying programme from a recognised university.
  • Applying for an honours degree, a postgraduate diploma or a masters degree at the University of Auckland.

  • Outstanding students who completed their qualifying programme at an overseas institution will be considered, based on their performance in the qualifying programme (including the standing of the awarding institution) and their references.

Student Services Fee

In 2022, you will also pay a Student Services Fee of NZ$8.16 per point, estimated at NZ$979.20 for full time study (120 points).

The Student Services Fee for 2023 will be set later in the year. 

Fees for conjoint programmes

The fees for your conjoint programme will be similar to the fees given for each individual programme above. In a conjoint programme, you will usually study 135 points of courses per year, so your fees will be slightly higher. The exact fees you pay will depend on the courses you enrol into for your conjoint programme.
