University Of Greenwich Overview

The University of Greenwich is a publicly funded university located on the banks of River Thames in London with a shared campus in Kent, UK. It was founded in the early 1890s as Woolwich Polytechnic, and in 1992, it was renamed as University of Greenwich. 1. Check your entry requirements

Before you start working on your application, you should check the entry requirements for your chosen course. For most of our postgraduate degrees, we ask for a minimum of a second-class Honours degree or equivalent, but some courses also require a higher level of award, relevant work experience or prior knowledge within a related subject area.


If you’re an international student and don’t meet the required academic and English-language criteria for entry onto our degrees, we have a number of preparatory programmes offering progression to a wide range of postgraduate degrees at Stirling.

2. When to apply

You can apply up to a year in advance of your course start date and we accept applications throughout the year.

Application deadlines

UK applicants: We don’t have a formal application deadline for UK postgraduate applicants.

International applicants: 2023/24 application deadlines are to be confirmed.

3. Completing your application

You can apply directly from our course pages or go directly to our online application form.

What you need to include in your application

You must include the following documents:

Once a decision has been made on your application, you will be sent an offer by email.

These are the responses you could receive:

  • an unconditional offer which means that you satisfy all the conditions required for entry and we’re offering you a place
  • a conditional offer which means you have not yet satisfied all the conditions of entry. We’ll send you a letter with the conditions you need to meet and may include such things as the classification of your degree award or evidence of English language proficiency

5. Responding to our offer

If you receive an offer, congratulations! Please respond to our offer as soon as you can, even if it’s only to let us know that you are declining.

You’ll be sent all of the information you need to access our Applicant Portal to respond to your offer. Your Applicant Portal can also be used to upload documentation, apply for University accommodation and select fee payment options.

6. Coming from overseas? Some things you may want to consider

Students coming in to the UK from overseas will require a visa.

You will find information on the Government website on whether you need to apply for a visa. 

If you do, you will need a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies) number, which is an electronic document containing a unique number for inclusion in your visa application. You will need to have accepted your unconditional offer and paid your tuition fee deposit.

Once you have applied for your visa, you may be called for an interview. They will want to know that your English is up to a suitable standard and may ask you questions about why you chose to study in the UK and at Stirling. We always recommend that students from overseas apply as soon as they can, but CAS information is only issued three months before the start of the new academic year.

7. Unable to take up your place?

If you are not able to take up your place there are a number of options available to you. 

  • You can opt to withdraw your application from your Applicant Portal.
  • Once you have your offer, you can decline it, if you think that your situation will not change (again, you can do this from your Applicant Portal).
  • If you think that your reason may be temporary then you can defer your offer although you would normally only get one opportunity to decline. If you have already paid your tuition fee deposit, then if you defer, this will go forward to the next year of application.

University of Greenwich Scholarships & Financial Aid

The University of Greenwich offers scholarships and bursaries to international students. These are either merit-based (sports and academic) or need-based. The scholarships and bursaries amount ranges from GBP 700 to 4000 annually depending on the type of award conferred. For more information on this, check the official website. Do note that students of the Medway School of Pharmacy are not eligible for any financial help from the University of Greenwich but may qualify for financial awards offered by the University of Kent (administered by the University of Greenwich). The University of Greenwich offers UG and PG programmes in the Spring or Autumn/Fall Intake. You can apply via an authorised in-country representative or direct to the university via the online application form.  International students, who wish to pursue undergraduate degree, can apply through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Check the university website to about courses offered in each intake. The deadlines vary as per intake and programme/ course, which may differ each year. Check the official website for current academic year deadlines. However, all the courses are available during the September intake.

Steps for UG Application

International students can apply to the University of Greenwich directly through the university’s application portal. What happens next?

Upon receipt of your application, the International Office will make an assessment of your suitability to the course, taking into consideration your education history, academic and language qualifications, any business experience, references and your personal statement.

Receiving an offer

If you meet the entry criteria, you may receive an unconditional offer. If you have yet to meet a condition, such as IELTS score of 6.0, or if you have to complete an academic qualification, you will receive a conditional offer subject to you satisfying that condition.

If you do not meet the requirements, you may be offered a place on a more suitable course.

If you applied through a representative, the offer will be addressed to you and sent to their office.

All offers are sent electronically to either our agent or direct to your e-mail account. Only authorised University of Greenwich staff can make offers of courses. Normally, this means course directors and admissions tutors. The International Office makes offers for courses up to and including Master’s degree level. In-country representatives do not make offers, but will pass on offers made by the university.

Accepting your offer

If you wish to accept the offer, please sign and return the acceptance of place, accompanied by the pre-registration deposit.

As soon as you fulfil any academic conditions of your offer, it is important you send us your documentation, so that we can qualify your offer as unconditional. Following this, we can initiate the process assisting you to obtain your Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) reference number, you will be sent a CAS checking sheet, which you must check, complete and return as soon as you can. We will then be able to issue a CAS statement containing your CAS number.

Please note: All applicants making student visa applications from outside the EEA/EU, or who are already studying in the UK and applying for a new course, require an electronic Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) reference number instead of a visa letter.

You can fund your studies in several ways.

Loans

If you are a UK student, you will probably be eligible for a student loan. International students may be able to access a loan in their home countries. For example, students from the USA may be eligible for Federal Loans.

I am an international student. How do I apply for a visa?

Applying from overseas

You can apply for your visa as soon as you have a Confirmation for Acceptance of Studies (CAS) from us.

To issue you with a CAS, we need you to accept your offer and pay the deposit on your course.

You can submit your visa application online up to three months before your course starts. You will need to visit your local Visa Application Centre to submit your documents. (This may be in a neighbouring country.)

You may be invited to an interview to discuss why you wish to study in the UK. You will also be asked to submit evidence that you meet the financial requirements to study in the UK.

Applying from within the UK

If you meet certain conditions, you will be able to apply online for a Student Visa from within the UK.

As part of this, you will need to scan and upload some supporting documents and pay the relevant fees. (We can assist with scanning if you do not have access at home.)

If you have not provided biometric ID before in the UK, you will be asked to book an appointment at a UKVCAS Service Point.

Visa applications from the UK

EU Settlement Status

If you are an EU, EEA, or Swiss national, and you were living in the UK before the end of the transition period, you will need to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme to stay in the UK.

I am an international student. How do I pay my deposit?

You can pay the pre-registration deposit (£3,000) by Western Union GlobalPay or by bank transfer.

You’ll be sent a receipt from Western Union GlobalPay, and you can track the payment on the payment portal using the ‘Track your payment’ tab.

Once this is paid, you can begin the process of getting your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number, which is required for your Student Visa application.

You must pay your deposit by certain deadlines to get your CAS in time to begin – usually 2-3 weeks before your course starts. We publish these dates a few months before the start of each intake.

Applying for a postgraduate research degree

Completing a postgraduate research degree at the University of Greenwich is a richly-rewarding experience.

As a research student, you will be looking for a research environment that enables you to develop your ideas in order for you to succeed. You can commence your studies at any time during the academic year although we strongly advise you to start in September or January so that you can join our induction processes and meet other students who are starting their studies at the same time. The Faculty of Business only allow applicants to start in September and January, please check with the Faculty for the application closing dates.

One of the key factors in achieving this is finding a supervisor and research group that can provide the support to complement your research interests. This is something that ideally you should have established before you start the application process and will speed up the process if you have already engaged with a potential supervisor.

Please note: Applications to the Medway School of Pharmacy are made through the University of Kent.

If you already have an idea of which academic you would like to supervise your project then please make contact with them and discuss your proposal.

Joining an established research group

A number of our MPhil/PhD students apply to join an establish research group, by applying for a funded studentship where a project design has already been decided that aligns with the research ambitions of a research group. Studentships are advertised on our studentship and scholarships page, and can also be found on external websites such www.findaphd.com. If you apply for one of the advertised students, please ensure that you include the scholarship/studentship reference number in the Personal Statement section of the application form so that we can identify which studentship you are applying for.

Entry requirements and personal funding

Before applying to undertake a research degree you need to ensure that you have a realistic plan on how you are going to fund both your fees and living expenses through the research and writing up process. Before applying it is really important that you meet the entry requirements for entry onto the MPhil/PhD programme which are:

  • a taught Masters degree, with a minimum average of 60% in all areas of assessment (eg Merit) level or above, in a generic subject area relevant to the subject matter of the proposed research project, and/or
  • a First Class or Second Class, First Division (Upper Second Class) Honours degree in a subject(s) areas relevant to the proposed research project,

In addition to the above, applicants whose first language is not English must also meet the English Language requirement, which is:
a Bachelors or Masters degree transcript from the UK or UKVI recognised Majority English Speaking Country (MESC). A full list of MESCs can be found on the application process page.

OR

  • For Faculty of Business, Faculty of Education, Health & Human Sciences, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences, an IELTS certificate demonstrating that you have achieved a minimum of 6.5 in all elements or an acceptable, demonstrable equivalent to this.

It is recommended that applicants should make the applications 3 months before the course start date, as 4-5 weeks are required for the successful processing of the application and arrival of the decision. After the decision, the admission letter will be sent to accepted students with the next steps, procedures, and requirements for admission and residence. The suitability of the application for admission is decided on the basis of previous education records, language qualifications, work experiences, personal statement and references.
