Applicants to Veterinary Science should be aware that students will be required as part of the registration process at the start of their studies to undergo an occupational health assessment.

A level requirementsAAA in three A Level subjects:

– Biology or human biology at grade A

– Chemistry, or another academic science-related subject (Physics, Mathematics, Geography, Geology, Psychology) at grade A

– A third subject of your choice* at grade A


If Chemistry is not offered at A-level, it must be offered at AS-level (at grade B or above).

For Science A-levels in which practical assessment is separately graded, a “pass” grade will be required.
(this is the typical entry requirement) for this course.

General Studies is not considered for this course.
Subject requirementsAt least five GCSEs at grade 7 (A) including two science GCSEs (either as separate subjects or e.g. dual award science). With at least a grade 6 (B) in:

English (literature or language)
Mathematics

A level: Three A levels in Biology, one other academic science related subject and any other subject excluding General Studies, Critical Thinking and Citizenship Studies. If Chemistry is not offered at A level, grade B at AS level is required.

For applicants from England: Where a science has been taken at A level (Chemistry, Biology or Physics), a pass in the Science practical of each subject will be required.
BTEC Level 3 National Extended DiplomaWe no longer accept BTEC qualifications.
International Baccalaureate36 points overall to include, Grade 6 at Higher Level Biology, Grade 6 at Higher Level Chemistry, Grade 6 at Higher Level in any other subject.
Irish Leaving CertificateGrade A1 (H1) in Biology, A1 (H1) in Chemistry, Grades A1 (H1), A1 (H1), B1 (H2), B1 (H2) in four further subjects, to include Physics or Maths. New grades to be awarded in 2017 are those indicated in brackets.
Scottish Higher/Advanced HigherNot accepted without Advanced Highers. Grade B in Biology at Advanced Higher, Grade B in Chemistry at Advance Higher, Grade AA in Biology and Chemistry and Grades AAB in 3 other subjects at Higher Level.
Welsh Baccalaureate AdvancedAccepted in place of a third A level
AccessKitemarked level 3 Access to Medicine at pre-approved colleges is required with a minimum of 15 credits in Biology and a minimum of 15 credits in Chemistry.

Contextual offers pilot

For 2021 entry, we are piloting the use of contextual offers for applicants offering a 2-grade reduction* from the standard offer for the following under-represented groups:

  • Students from English neighbourhoods with historically low participation in Higher Education (known as POLAR 4 Quintile 1 postcodes, after the dataset used by the Office for Students to track this metric)
  • UK Care Experienced students (ie qualifying students who have spent any amount of time in Local Authority care and meet associated eligibility criteria used nationally)

*Please note, programmes in Medicine and Dentistry are currently excluded from this pilot.

Additional fee information

If this is your first degree and you are a Home student applying for entry in 2022, you do not have to pay your fees upfront. Instead, you can take out a tuition fee loan which is paid straight to the University. This is available to most students, no matter what their household income. For students applying for 2022 entry Tuition fees for 2022 entry are £9,250. Exceptions to the £9,250 fee: Some of our programmes charge less than the full £9,250 fee: •Foundation programmes: the fee for the foundation year of specified programmes at Carmel College is £5,140. •Programmes with a year in industry or a year abroad: the fee for students spending a full year working in industry is £1,850. The fee for students spending a full year abroad is £1,385.
