The University of Miami is a private, non-profit, research university located in Coral Gables, Florida. It was founded in 1925 as the University of Miami School of Law and was chartered by the State of Florida in 1926. On September 24, 1960, the Board of Trustees voted to change the name of the school to reflect a more comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs. In 1964, after receiving approval from the Board of Regents, UM’s undergraduate program officially became the University of Miami, while the law school continued under its historic name.

University of Miami Division I sports teams are known as the Hurricanes and compete in the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The school’s mascot is Sebastian the Ibis, a species of marsh bird that is known for weathering tropical storms.
