Our residency training program is one of the largest anesthesiology training programs in the country. In addition to hands-on clinical training in the operating room, our residents’ education is supplemented with dedicated didactic presentations from experienced faculty, weekly oral board practice with our department’s five oral board examiners, departmental grand rounds, sub-specialty didactic lecture series, and regular simulation sessions. The Department of Anesthesiology at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth strives to demonstrate excellence through innovative education and dynamic clinical training. We provide comprehensive, high-caliber instruction in the world’s largest medical center, at some of the nation’s leading institutions. We instruct a diverse body of learners, including anesthesiology residents, fellows, medical students, student nurse anesthetists, anesthesiologist assistant students and dental residents. The goal of the Anesthesiology Education Team is to coordinate education efforts amongst all anesthesia learners, to promote inclusion and provide support for our educational leaders.
The Department of Anesthesiology also fosters interdepartmental collaborations with scientists at UTHealth and the Texas Medical Center.

The department’s Residency Program trains 60 anesthesiology interns and residents. The department also offers numerous opportunities for advanced training in medical simulation, education research, quality and safety, obstetrics, regional, and neuro anesthesia.

Resident Application Process
Applicants for residency training in the department of Anesthesiology at UT Health San Antonio must meet one of the following qualifications:
LCME Medical School – Graduate of medical school in the U.S. and Canada which has been accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
International Medical School – Graduate of an international medical school (must have one of the following)
- The school must be approved by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners (please see Schools That Do Not Have to Prove Substantial Equivalence)
- The applicant must have a currently valid ECFMG certificate
- The applicant must have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction
Graduate of international medical school who has completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school
- We sponsor only J-1 visas
- We do not have a USMLE Score requirement (must have passed the exam)
- We do not have a “year of graduation” requirement
- A personal interview is required

Book Money
The Pediatrics department provides Med-Peds residents with $65.00 per year to use towards purchasing medicine or pediatric textbooks. PREP guide with questions are provided annually free of charge in preparation for boards. Internal medicine does not provide a book fund. However, they furnish MKSAP online which includes questions and answers in preparation for boards.
Vacations
Vacation time must be shared equally within both departments for all PGY levels. Three (3) weeks of vacation are provided which can be split into 10 days and 11 days which can be taken on either medicine or pediatrics respectively.
Sick Leave
Paid sick leave accumulates at a rate of one day each month and accumulates to a maximum of thirty days. Sick leave carries forward year to year but is not compensated upon termination. In the event an illness exceeds accumulated paid sick leave and vacation time, a leave of absence without pay may be granted.

Each resident is entitled to 5 working days per contract year to attend an educational meeting.
