UVA boasts strong programs across its various departments—including Engineering & Applied Science (ranked #1), Arts & Sciences (ranked #9), Business (#6) and Architecture (#19). The school offers over 700 undergraduate courses at any given time; these include over 200 undergraduate majors with different concentrations within each major (e.g., Data Analysis or Data Management). • Michael W. Mahoney, who has won numerous awards for his research about how to improve medical diagnosis. He’s also a member of the National Academy of Engineering, one of only 100 people in the country who meets this honor’s very high standards for excellence in engineering research
• Kevin Staley, whose work applies artificial intelligence techniques like deep learning to problems like natural language processing (understanding what people type into search engines) and image classification (identifying photos based on content). He even trains neural networks by feeding them datasets from YouTube videos!

Conclusion

It is difficult to say exactly whether UVA’s data science program will be a good fit for you, but from the information we have presented here, it seems like there is a lot to like. They are well-respected and have an outstanding computer science program in general. It may be worth mentioning that they do not appear to offer a stand alone data science degree, so you may want to look elsewhere if that is your main interest. On the other hand, if you are looking for high quality computer science education with many opportunities for research then UVa may be just what you’re looking for.
