Computer Science

This pre-major is designed for the student who plans to transfer to the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando, Florida as a junior to complete a four-year Bachelor’s degree in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. It is based upon an articulation agreement in Computer Science with UCF. Students who plan to transfer are responsible for completing the admission requirements of UCF.

LOWER-DIVISION COURSEWORK

To fulfill the lower-division (first half) of the B.A.S. in Computing Technology and Software Development degree program, you must complete an Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in one of the following areas.

Choose from these associate degrees:

A.S. in Computer Information Technology

Become a well-rounded technician who solves a wide range of problems—from computer repair and software installation to computer security—all while meeting your general education and prerequisite requirements for this bachelor’s degree.

A.S. in Computer Programming and Analysis

Gain an insight into computer technology and software development, including developing applications, providing technical solutions and learning programming languages. It lays the foundation in which you’ll build on in this bachelor’s degree.

Associate Degree in Other Subject Area

If you’ve earned an associate degree from a regionally accredited institution, many of your earned credits may be applied to this program. Several prerequisite courses may still be needed before beginning your upper-level coursework.

UPPER-DIVISION 

After completing a qualifying lower-division associate degree, you may move on to the upper-division (second half) of the B.A.S. in Computing Technology and Software Development degree program.

The Computer Programming and Analysis Associate in Science (A.S.) degree program at Valencia College is a two-year program that prepares you to go directly into a specialized career within the information technology industry.
Students in this program develop skills in computer programming and analysis, while enjoying hands-on training in the foundations of computer technology and software development. Elective courses allow students to enhance their skill sets with advanced programming and Web development. All classes are taught in state-of-the-art computer labs with the most popular software and hardware, and the curriculum includes an internship program that places students directly into IT departments where they can put their new knowledge into practice and gain real world experience.

The Bachelor of Applied Science in Computing Technology and Software Development provides students the opportunity to earn a degree which prepares students to analyze software problems, plans, and solutions to design a logical plan for program requirements; implement software solutions and communicate effectively in writing and orally regarding the solutions; demonstrate collaborative skills in team settings to plan and accomplish software solutions; and apply ethical concepts to design solutions.  The curriculum emphasizes practical, real-world problems.

Admission Requirements

Students must submit official transcripts from all prior colleges and universities and must meet the following criteria:

  • Satisfactory completion of all State Common Program Prerequisites with a grade of C or higher:
    • COP 1000C or COP 2334*, and
    • CGS 2545C or COP 1540C*, and
    • CTS 1134C or CET 2179C or CTS 1650*, and
    • MAC 1105, MGF 1106, STA 2023 or higher level math.
  • Completion of one of the following:
    • an Associate in Arts (A.A) degree** from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum of 60 semester hours of course work and a 2.0 overall Grade Point Average (GPA), or
    • an Associate in Science (A.S.) degree** in of the following areas: Computer Programming & Analysis, Computer Information Technology, or Network Engineering Technology from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum of 60 semester hours of course work and a 2.0 overall Grade Point Average (GPA), or
    • at least 60 semester credit hours of college level course work at a regionally accredited institution, including 15 credits that are applicable to Valencia College’s General Education Program requirements, with a minimum of a 2.0 overall Grade Point Average (GPA) .

*Course not offered at Valencia but will be accepted for admission if transferred from another Florida public institution
**Other Associate or higher degrees must be formally evaluated by the Computing Technology Department for admission.

Florida Tech Valencia Presidential Scholarship

 

Each year, Florida Tech, a private university located in Melbourne that has been named one of the top technological colleges in the Southeast, and Valencia College make 15 Presidential Transfer Scholarships available to exceptional students who are graduating from Valencia College and wish to continue their undergraduate studies at Florida Tech’s Melbourne campus.

The Presidential Transfer Scholarship is awarded annually for students entering in the fall semester only.
