UNIVERSITY OH HOHENHIM
Veterinary Specialist
The veterinary specialty training program takes place at a University-affiliated accredited veterinary practice. The training curriculum focuses on office administration, after-hours help, OR support, and laboratory work. The general training plan of the regulations on vocational training as a veterinary expert defines the training contents.
Requirements | Mittlere Reife, Abitur, or German qualification for study at a university of applied sciences |

Length of vocational training | 3 years (possibility to reduce to 2 years) |
The veterinary specialist training program is organized as part of Germany’s dual vocational training system. This means that trainees spend 1.5 days per week in theory lectures at a vocational school (Alexander Fleming Schule, Stuttgart-Nord). Practical knowledge and skills are learned in the remaining time at work. After two years, an intermediate examination is held. At the conclusion of the training program, there is a written and practical final test.
The examinations are administered by the vocational school or by the State Association of Independent Veterinarians.
What happens after completing the training program?
Veterinary specialists are eligible to apply to all vacant positions at the University. The subsequent hiring of former trainees as permanent employees, as well as future career development opportunities, depend both on institutional needs and on candidates’ personal and professional performance.
Applications must be submitted during the application period (6 months year before training starts).
