Best Cities for Chemical Engineers

1. Houston, TX

Nicknamed the ‘Space City’ and the 4th most populous city in the US, Houston was awarded the top spot on our list in a dominant showing. First, chemical engineers in the Houston area get paid a sizable $118,000 per year on average. That’s a full 30% more than the US median salary of $90,300 for chemical engineering professionals. Houston also has a much higher concentration of chemical engineers in than most other cities, giving them the 6th best location quotient in our study. Finally, for a large metropolitan area, Houston is an extremely affordable city to live in. It has the 6th lowest cost of living in our study, but adjusting for population it would rank number 1.

2. Beaumont, TX

This Jefferson County town was honored with the #2 spot on our list for a number of reasons. Firstly, chemical engineers in Beaumont get paid well: $108,950 per year on average, or 20% more than the average chemical engineer. Beaumont also benefited from having the second highest concentration of chemical engineers in the US. And finally, your dollar goes much further when you’re living and working in Beaumont; the cheapest town in our Top 10.

3. Baton Rouge, LA

The “Capital City”, Baton Rouge is located along the Mississippi River in southeast Louisiana. There are plenty of opportunities in Baton Rouge for chemical engineers. Not only does the metro area have a high concentration of chemical engineering jobs per capita, it has a lot of them (1,340 and good for 2nd most inside our Top 20). Chemical engineers in Baton Rouge can also look forward to a high median salary, $108,240, while still enjoying a low cost of living compared to most cities in the US. Top chemical engineering employers in the city include Albemarle, BASF, and ExxonMobil.

4. Wilmington, DE

This town of 71,000 residents makes the list in 4th place. Home to DuPont HQ, Wilmington has the 3rd highest concentration of chemical engineering jobs in the country. Chemical engineers will also enjoy the highest average annual salary of any city in the country, $124,930, almost 40% more than the national average. The content and duration of your studies will depend on the type of chemical engineering program you select. Undergraduates can choose to study a bachelor of engineering (BEng) program over three or four years, or a master of engineering (MEng) qualification over four or five years.

Although these courses initially share similar modules and content, MEng students will ultimately study a wider range of topics in greater depth. Only students with an MEng will achieve fully-chartered engineer status from the Institution of Chemical Engineers.

Once you’ve completed your master’s, you can choose to study a PhD. A PhD is the highest level of postgraduate qualification and can take anywhere from four to seven years to finish.

Chemical engineering programs are renowned for their high number of contact hours and expectations of independent study. You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, practical laboratory sessions, group workshops, and tutorials. Some institutions will invite industry professionals to deliver guest lectures and organize visits to engineering sites.

All chemical engineering students are encouraged to complete a sandwich year during their studies to gain hands-on experience in the industry, network with professionals, and boost their employability. Assessment methods will vary from module to module, but you can expect to complete exams, essays, reports, presentations, group work, and independent research projects.

Although the titles of modules and their content will differ slightly between universities around the world, most chemical engineering courses will cover these topics:

  • Separation processes
  • Thermodynamics
  • Cell biology
  • Heat, mass, and momentum
  • Fluid mechanics
  • Managing the environment
  • Plant design
  • Process systems and operations

Is Engineering Career Worth all the Hype?

Yes, it is. Engineering fields are usually among the top ten paying careers. All the sweat, hard work, stress, and fears of graduating with a good grade during your undergrads are not going to be wasted. Now is a payback time and the job market is pretty healthy for engineers in whichever career path you choose.

A survey conducted by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that some engineering fields like mining, construction and manufacturing are undergoing a period of upsurge. There were additional 415 000 positions in the healthcare industry alone as of 2016.

Engineering graduates have always been in the news for enjoying high recruitment levels and some fields like the humanities are in sharp contrast. Getting higher pay is not just a reward for sleepless nights, stress, and focused efforts while in school, it means that for you to keep earning higher, you must put in much effort in your career. Therefore, you need to reinforce your courage for a lifetime of stress and focused learning, though with more rewards in whichever field you found yourself.

In case you are tempted to quit the job because of the challenges, do not forget that it rains everywhere. Expect to enjoy a ride with some bumps here and there, not forget that these bumps are what makes life an interesting place.

The above figures are just a snapshot in time, as they did not capture potentially future trends in the industry. There are some fields that might be highly paid at the moment, but may be affected by future developments like changes in demands and supply. Again, you should bear in mind that many employees are likely to retire at least ten years from now. This could affect the demand for more workers and ultimately affect the salaries offered to them.

The data may not have captured some engineering fields. Computer engineering, for instance, was not fully represented as some fields like software engineering were not represented. This is despite that the field records more growth than the computer hardware. Its potential impact may not be exaggerated as Artificial Intelligence is yet to gift the world the best it could offer. Also, with an influx of graduates into the industry, comes a dramatic reduction in wages.
