md/phd in nutrition

The gut, food and metabolism research section has a portfolio of research which spans the life cycle from birth to adulthood. Research projects deal with the digestion and absorption of foods and food components, interactions with gut microflora, metabolism of nutrients and non-nutrient food ingredients, impact on plasma lipids and insulin resistance in normal subjects and in adult and child patients.

The diet and chronic disease research group has pioneered new research methods in a portfolio of research which spans the full spectrum of translational research.

Research projects are often jointly supervised accross our research institutes.

STUDY OPTIONS

PhD

  • Duration: 3/4 years full-time; 5 years part-time

Individual research projects are tailored around the expertise of principal investigators.

MSc (Research)

  • Duration: 1 year full-time; 2 years part-time

MD (Doctor of Medicine)

  • Duration: 2 years full-time; 4 years part-time (for medically-qualified graduates only)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent.

FEES AND FUNDING

Fees

2021/22

  • UK: £4,500
  • International & EU: £23,000

Prices are based on the annual fee for full-time study. Fees for part-time study are half the full-time fee.

Additional fees for all students:

  • Re-submission by a research student £540
  • Submission for a higher degree by published work £1,355
  • Submission of thesis after deadline lapsed £350
  • Submission by staff in receipt of staff scholarship £790

Depending on the nature of the research project, some students will be expected to pay a bench fee (also known as research support costs) to cover additional costs. The exact amount will be provided in the offer letter.

Alumni discount

We offer a 20% discount to our alumni on all Postgraduate Research and full Postgraduate Taught Masters programmes. This includes University of Glasgow graduates and those who have completed Junior Year Abroad, Exchange programme or International Summer School with us. The discount is applied at registration for students who are not in receipt of another discount or scholarship funded by the University. No additional application is required.

MSC, PHD AND MD BY RESEARCH

Human Nutrition provides research training in a wide range of areas of PhD, MD and MSc. Research projects are often jointly supervised with other University Departments.


MSC BY RESEARCH

The department is active in a wide number of areas of nutrition research and can offer 12 month research projects suitable for submission as MSc theses. Interested applicants should refer to the research pages of this website. This provides an indication of the areas of research currently being carried out.

PHD BY RESEARCH

The Department offers a 3 year full time research programme leading to the degree of PhD. A part time PhD by research option is also available. There are currently 23 PhD students engaged in research in Human Nutrition.

MD BY RESEARCH

Medical graduates may undertake an MD by arrangement with Human Nutrition. There is a wide range of opportunity for specialist investigation into nutritional issues. Interested applicants should contact Human Nutrition.
